Liver Spots: Treatment Options And Their Costs

Liver spots, alternately called age spots, are lesions not raised from the skin and that are most commonly colored brown, gray or black

. These lesions are most commonly found in the areas of the body that are exposed to the sun most of the time. These areas include the face and the upper extremities. They are oval-shaped and their sizes vary from the size of a freckle up to a centimeter in diameter. Lastly, we see signs that the skin suffered significant damage such as the onset of wrinkles and the appearance of dry skin.

Despite its name, the liver spot is not related to the liver. Why do liver spots occur then? Our skin contains melanin, the pigment responsible for giving our skin its current color. However, when our skin is frequently exposed to the damaging rays of the sun - the ultraviolet rays - the production of this pigment is increased. The result: age spots. But this does not happen overnight. This occurs typically over several years. Therefore, the damage your skin receives today will produce age spots only after years have passed. To our surprise, the sun is not the only causative factor. Even tanning equipment popular to fair-skinned individuals are to blame. And the last cause worth mentioning is aging.

Tenderness or other forms of danger might not accompany liver spots but a flaw in your physical appearance and lowered self-esteem will. Therefore, there are treatment options to choose from if an affected individual opts to have these skin lesions removed. But these treatment options do not come free of charge.

These treatments include the prescription of creams containing chemicals to bleach the spot gradually. Their ingredients are hydroquinone, tretinoin, a combination of hydroquinone and tretinoin or cortisone and these creams usually cost ninety to two hundred dollars. Some can decide to use chemicals to exfoliate their skin. The price differs depending if it is a light peel, medium peel or deep peel. A light chemical peel usually ranges from two hundred to three hundred dollars. The next more expensive peel, the medium peel, is about five hundred to thousand dollars. For three to six thousand dollars, you can undergo deep chemical peels. Laser therapy is also used to perform excess skin melanocytes eradication. Laser therapy amounts to around one hundred dollars per small area. Intense pulsed light therapy which favors light rather than laser is also available if you can spend seventy to eighty dollars per session per small area.

But the aforementioned costs are approximate. This is because there are several factors that are brought into consideration before they arrive at the final cost and these are: affected area's size, materials used, doctors' fees and your residence's cost of living. The best way to be sure: ask your doctor about it!
