The four wheel drive carry all rocked down the rutted jungle track

, burst out of the cool, dark forest and emerged into the bright coastal sunlight. We had left one of the great natural wonders of the world, the Daintree rain forest only to face another, the Great Barrier Reef, just 10 miles offshore. You can find two wonders located side by side only in northern Queensland, one of the least developed regions along Australia's tropical northeast coast.

Actually, one of the oldest rain forests in the world can be found here. When it comes to the reef, it swings closest to land in this part of the northern coast stretching north and south along 1,250 miles of shore. Available in the rainforest and reef is easy visitor access. Yes, you can dive down and see 1,200 species of tropical reef fish or the 350 types of spectacularly colorful living coral that make up the reef but you can also watch from a submersible glass sided craft or from an underwater observatory.

Serving as the jumping off point was Cairns, it is the gateway to Australia's Marlin Coast, a small tropical city of 85,000 that is as beautiful as a British colonial outpost. Twisting 21 miles up and through mountains, gorges, and rain forests to the village of Kuranda was the 100 year old Cairns Kuranda Railway that we rode during our out of town trip. A drive lasting 90 minutes north along the Marlin Coast and inland toward the rain forest followed our return to Cairns.

Contained in the nearby rain forest are 13 of the 19 families of ancient plant life still found on Earth. Dating back to 130 million years are some of these. Passable through four wheel drive vehicles are the old rutted dirt tracks in the forest that are built for logging. You can have a more leisurely look at the rain forest through the pull offs with one that opens on to an hour's easy stroll along a well marked trail.

One tour service offers environmentally sensitive into the rain forest which comes with a boat ride down the Daintree River and starts from Silky Oaks. From Silky Oaks, we took a short drive to the old gold rush village of Port Douglas, one of the major gateways to the Great Barrier Reef. For scuba divers charter boats were available, for skimmers there were sailboats, and then a fleet of twin hulled jet catamarans was available to ferry groups of people to permanent platforms atop the reef.

Taking a look at the beauty of the coral reef and its multicolored fish can be done without getting wet and this is with the 30 minute trips alongside the coral aboard two glass-sided semi submersibles. Available for snorkeling guidance are trained marine biologists. An open air coffee shop is frequented by locals in the local hotel where we stayed in and the swimming pool area has private grottoes, one behind a waterfall. Outside downtown Port Douglas is where you can see the famous Four Mile Beach with beautiful stretches of palm fringed white sand that curve along the ocean.

Serving as a jump off point away from sea is Port Douglas and it is where you can view the northern Queensland environment in a different way. It was during the past century when a tableland high above the coast became a prime cattle raising area and you will still see some of the original homesteads on the old cattle ranches today. You have Wetherby which is the site of a 1870s homestead and still a working cattle station. With the family proprietors opening it for tourists, they can see the real Australia.

Every trip calls for travel insurance. This is if you want a relaxed trip.
