These Organizations ask for lifelong commitment and promised unfaltering support in return. Though often misted with controversies, these Organizations remain to be popular till date. Leading the pack are the nine historical national fraternities and sororities- Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta.
Over the time there have been questions that why do Black Fraternities & Sororities employ Greek letters, instead of an African based alphabet? The answer lies in the following. The origin of Greek letters can be traced back to the first fraternity Phi Beta Kappa. It is important to understand that the Greek writing system and philosophies has connections to Africa, particularly Egypt. Allegedly, the Greeks went to Africa and stole the writings, philosophies, and lifestyles of the Egyptians. Although each organization does employ Greek letters the objective of the fraternity was founded with the use of Greek letters. In keeping with the tradition that constitutes the reasons why Greek alphabets are used in place of African ones.
