Ancient treatments

If you have lived in ancient times, and you have got headaches often, you would probably have been treated by having a hole drilled in your head!!. This process is known as trepanning, and it was the oldest surgery known to man.Trepanning is baically boring, cutting and scrapping open holes in human skull. The word comes from the Greek "Trupanon"meaning borer. It was practiced as early as 10,000 BC in many parts of the world.Trepanning is also called trepanation.

Holes were cut in the skull, not only to cure headache, but also to treat brain disorders, let out evil sprits or to treat insanity.Scientists have evidance that people often survived surgeries and came back for many more!!!.

What is more amazing is that the patient was usually wide awake and not given any anaesthetic!!

TOOLS FOR DRILLING...

The tools used for this process were really amazing and really cannot beleive this at all.The tools for trepanning were sharp enough to get past the skull, and cut into the bones. They looked rather like a carpenter's tools. In the middle ages, a metal drill was used.Once the hole was made, the wound was covered with a piece of stone, shell or even silver or gold.

This was carried to cure even epilepsy and also to treat head injuries. the surgeon would remove a small piece of bone to relieve pressure from the brain. Over a period of time the bones would grow and it would be shallower than the rest of the skull.by examining the skull remains, scientists are able to determine if the patient survived the operation. The tools used were unsophisticated flint knives and corkscrew drills. Approximately two third of those who underwent the procedure survived.

The modern version of this technique is craniotomy. The procedure is used to treat head injury and it can relieve the brain from pressure caused by fluids and blood build up. This also allow the insertion of monitoring devices. However, the brain is replaced afterwards. It is unbeleivable that this ancient surgerywas done without giving anesthesia.
