According to the 2001 census report, Nagpur is the biggest city within central India. Moreover, Nagpur is the 2nd capital of the Maharashtra state. It is the headquarters of both the Nagpur division and Nagpur district. There are an estimated 2.4 million inhabitants in this city. Furthermore, in terms of population, this city is considered as the world's 143rd biggest urban city. It is ranked as the 13th biggest urban assembly in India. And Nagpur is named as the world's 114th largest city.

Nagpur is the home of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabhas annual winter session. This city is the political and commercial center of the Maharashtra state's East Vidarbha region. It was founded by the Gond people many years back. The city later became a part of the Maratha Empire under the rule of the Bhonsles.

During the 19th century, the British East India Company took over Nagpur and made it the capital city of Berar and the central provinces. Nagpur is a significant location for various Hindu Nationalist organizations such as VHP and RSS. It is also a significant location for the Dalit Buddhist Movement. The city of Nagpur has a very strategic location. It is placed along the center of the north and south portion of India as well as the center of the east and west portion. The Shri Mahalaxmi Devi and the Sri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir of Koradi are the most significant Hindu Temples in the region. There are various religious events celebrated in this city annually. Like all the locals in India, the people in Nagpur celebrate their Hindu festivals with enthusiasm and fervor. Some examples of Hindu Festivals include Holi, Dussera and Diwali. There are also celebrations that last several days. These long celebrations are usually held during the Durga Puja and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. This is even though they are only celebrated by a small population of the city.

Today, Nagpur City is also branded as the Orange City. It has become famous because of this fruit. The city also takes pride of its industries and research centers. It has attracted many tourists from around the globe because of its many magnificent temples.
