Yorkshire Terriers are a small breed of dog that were first bred in the mid to late 1800s. Yorkie Information indicates the breed was first introduced to North America in 1872. The breed became recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Yorkies were first bred in a rugged northern part of England known as Yorkshire. They were bred to catch the mice and rats that infested the mine shafts and clothing mills of the area. Originally they were larger in size than the Yorkies that are bred today. Kennel clubs place the Yorkie in the toy or companion groups.
Today's Yorkies are a miniaturized version when compared to the dogs bred in the past. Yorkie Information shows that through the years the dogs were bred smaller and smaller by using selective breeding. These smaller animals were turned into more of a fashion dog. Yorkies were bred small and carried around by women in handbags or under their arms. Yorkies have also had several famous dogs including one owned by President Nixon's daughter as well as holding several records for the smallest dogs in history.
Highly energetic is one way of describing a Yorkie. Yorkie Information shows that this breed needs daily walks and likes to play. While they are full of energy, their size lends itself to apartment living. Yorkies can be sensitive to cold weather and prefer living in warmer climates. They also are loyal and affectionate, but they can be overprotective of their "family." A Yorkie's life expectancy ranges from 12 to 15 years, but owners should be aware of the health issues, some of them genetic, that can affect the Yorkshire Terrier such as bronchitis, cataracts and eye infections.
A Yorkie's coat sheds very little, but it does require regular grooming. For Yorkies that are show dogs, it takes many hours of grooming to achieve the shiny, silky show coat. Yorkie Information says that most owners will opt to have the hair clipped to avoid the high maintenance required for the long hair. The clipping will give the Yorkie a shaggy appearance. Many owners will use a ribbon to tie up the hair or topknot as it is called on top of a Yorkie's head.
