Why wait until December to see artificial Christmas trees?
Artificial Christmas trees are a common sight in houses across many countries in December
, but one art director has decided there is a place for such objects in the summertime too.Curator Simon Castets made a festive display at the Yvon Lambert Gallery in New York, the Huffington Post reports.
The exhibition featured work from a number of artists, including John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Michael Brown, Heman Chong, Jonathan Horowitz, Matt Keegan, Keegan McHargue and Ariel Schlesinger.
Entitled Christmas in July, the unusual sight is likely to have got visitors talking.
Commenting on his motivation for showing the collection, Mr Castets said it was to emphasise the "polarities inherent to the Saturnalia and Christmas traditions and [to underscore] the contradictory nature of a contemporary ritual in the making."
One of pieces on display featured fake Christmas trees complete with lights and an extension cord.
Measuring seven feet by eight feet by three feet, it was the creation of Alex Da Corte.
Named Loved Despite of Great Faults, the artwork was created in 2008.
Commenting on its name, Mr Castets said: "Alex borrowed this title from a Blonde Redhead song."
Another feature of the exhibition was a creation by Roman Signer named Zimmer mit Weihnachtsbaum, which translates as Room With Christmas Tree.
This also featured an artificial Christmas tree, but this one has some unusual decorations placed on it.
The Yvon Lambert Gallery was founded in 2003 and moved to its current location three years ago. It was designed by Richard Gluckman in collaboration with Thomas Zolli.
While it often features modern pieces of work, having Christmas trees during the summer was something of a novelty for the venue.
As well as this centre, those behind it run another in Paris, which was opened by Yvon Lambert more than 40 years ago in 1967.
