Cornwall is a beautiful region with attractive beaches plus an interesting history. Renowned for fishing, tin mining, pasties, wrecks, surfing and art, Cornwall is a wonderful destination to go. Whilst it gets really busy in places during the summer, there are still places to go to escape from it all.

St Ives is a town renowned for artists and it now houses the Tate Gallery. The lighting and the landscape are inspirational and there are many places to look at artists at work or appreciate the work they produce in galleries.

Mousehole is a lovely village with a small harbour and winding streets. Dylan Thomas actually referred to it as being the loveliest village in England'. Another beautiful village is Port Isaac which was used to film Doc Martin with Martin Clunes. Try The Old School Hotel for different holiday accommodation. St Michael's Mount is surely an interesting place to go. You get to it by rowing boat and you walk up a steep path to the castle at the top of the island.

If perhaps swimming is your thing, try out the open air swimming pool on the seafront in Penzance. The town itself is quite large and has some excellent Georgian buildings.

The Atlantic coast of Cornwall is the destination to visit surf. Newquay is considered the most famous place to go and is geared up for the cool and trendy youngsters that flock there. The town is suitable for families but those that want to get far from it all yet still enjoy some surfing would be best off looking elsewhere along the coast. Lands End is the most south-westerly point of mainland Britain and a rugged piece of coast. The nearby beach destination of Sennen is great for surfing.

At Watergate Bay, where famous chef Jamie Oliver has his restaurant Fifteen, you are able to relax with some outstanding food and sit back and watch the extreme sports - from surfing to kite surfing. The Extreme Academy will teach you almost any sail and board sport you want.

More celeb chefs are evident in Padstow. Rick Stein has his seafood restaurant there, a fish and chip shop and his cookery school. The May Day festivities are really a must see but there will be lots of people.

If tales are your thing, the reputed birthplace of King Arthur is a must see. This impressive castle ruin is situated high above the crashing surf. Merlin's cave is also well worth seeing. You may also enjoy the Museum of Witchcraft in nearby Boscastle. The village was devastated in 2004 with a flash flood but is now rebuilt and still a wonderful destination. Go walking along the cliff path for great views over the harbour and don't forget to take a Cornish pasty with you to nibble on as you go.

For yet more amazing Cornish meals, try Austell's fine dining restaurant in St Austell. You could combine it with a visit to the close by Eden Project with its remarkable variety of plant life from all around the globe set in stunning biomes.
