Who Invented The Medifast Diet?

I've been on this diet for a while and I often write about my experiences on it or share answers to the questions that I receive on my blog. A couple of days ago, someone wrote in and asked me who developed or invented Medifast, if this diet has been medically tested, and if it requires a doctor's prescription or doctor supervision. I'll answer these questions in the following article. By no means am I an expert or doctor, but I'll share my research with you.

Medifast Was Invented In 1980 By A Doctor: Many people don't realize how long this diet has been around - almost 30 years now. In the beginning, the diet was an experiment. Doctors were looking for ways for cardiac patients to lose weight quickly in preparation for cardiac surgery. From what I've read, the results were good enough that more research and development was done.

From what I understand, the diet was originally only available via prescription. You had to get it from a doctor and remain medically supervised. Then came the Take Shape For Life program which incorporated Medifast foods and still encouraged supervision. Eventually, though, the products became available to any one. You can order them on line and they're shipped to your house.

Although it's always a good idea to have your doctor's input, it's no longer a requirement. When I started this diet, I told my doctor and he was encouraging, but I'd made all of the decisions and implementations myself. In truth, I find this diet fairly easy to follow. You eat six times per day and for five of those, you eat the plan's prepackaged meals. The only real restriction is that they don't want you eating more than two bars per day. Other than that, you can pick and chose as you like.

Once per day, you eat one "lean and green" meal which you prepare yourself. This is typically lean protein and low glycemic veggies. As long as you can follow the directions regarding which foods are allowed on the lean and green meal, there's really no calculations or tallying.

Medifast Has Been Researched And Tested: This diet has been tested in many clinical trials, including a pretty well known study by researchers at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The dieters who were using Medifast lost twice as much weight and complied with the guidelines twice as well as those folks on the comparison diet.

Of course, you should use your own judgment with any diet that you're on. Many people will try to skip one of the five meals or skimp on the lean and green meal in an attempt to shave off even more calories. This isn't advisable. If you don't eat enough, your body can't get into the metabolic state called ketosis (where you burn your own fat) which is how this diet works.
