Is The Medifast Program Really Good For You?

Is The Medifast Program Really Good For You?

In the last year, I lost a decent amount of weight on this diet. Although most people are complementary, I sometimes hear comments like "is this really good for you to lose so much weight," or "are you starving yourself," or "can this really be healthy?" While I do appreciate the concern, I do not hesitate to reassure people that I'm getting plenty in terms of both quality and quantity of food and nutrients. In this article, I'll explain why it has been my experience that Medifast actually is good for you and healthy if you use it as directed and use common sense.

Why I Believe Medifast Is Nutritionally Sound: I conducted a lot of research before I settled on this plan. I didn't realize that this diet was developed by physicians and has been tested at well respected establishments like the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Admittedly, the foods are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and low in calories (around 1,000 calories per day, depending on the foods you consume on your own.) But, the nutrition is sound and you are asked to eat six times per day. You eat five small meals consisting of prepackaged foods that are provided for you. You are also asked to prepare one larger, main meal on your own that consists of fresh, healthful protein and vegetables. This is supposed to ensure that you are getting enough, aren't as hungry, and are getting sufficient nutrients and fresh foods.

This diet was designed to nudge your body into a metabolic state where it is burning it's own fat because of the high protein content. I know that some people skip the lean and green meal or eat fewer than the six times, but I am not one of them. I've had decent results following the plan as designed so I've never been tempted to cut corners. I also believe that if you skip meals, you will not have the full benefit of the revved metabolism and this could actually hurt your results.

And, the intention is not to be on the diet forever. Once you hit your target goal, then you go on the transition and then on to the maintenance portion of the diet where you taper off of the diet foods and add in more of a regular diet. Some people may sporadically have a shake or two each day, but the goal is to get to a point where you are able to resume a modified but normal diet.

So to answer the question of "is Medifast really good for you," my opinion is yes. Yours may differ, but I've learned to think of food in a whole new way and I've learned to move my body more. In my opinion, this diet has been much better than gastric bypass or other invasive methods, at least for me.
