I think this image paints a pretty good picture of what goes on in a lot of our heads. In order for you to really jumpstart your weight loss motivation level and keep it high, you have to be able to get your mind in the right place. Our brains are usually pretty crowded.

We've got a lot going on up there. From work, to errands, to our kids, to our dreams, etcetera, etcetera...

When you try and add dieting or trying to lose weight to the busy space that is your brain a certain pattern often occurs. You start out strong, brimming with confidence and motivation. But then after a few weeks (or days for a lot of us :-) ) you start to get "busy".

You know what I'm talking about? The rest of your life creeps...back...into...the...picture.

All of the sudden the recipes of the Mediterranean diet you started with excitement a week ago are just taking too long to prepare. So you pick something quick to eat on your way home from work. The 20 minutes you were doing a few times a week on the treadmill get lost in the day to day shuffle.

The point is, you can KNOW all the right exercises to do. You can KNOW all the right food to eat. But it's not gonna amount to a hill of beans if you can't get your mind in the right place to follow through with any of it. So how do you get motivated? You have to change your focus. What do you really want in terms of losing weight? What's your desired outcome? Focus on it everyday.

And I don't mean on a simple intellectual level like: "I want to lose weight because I will be healthier." Get your emotions involved. Picture your life once you've lost the weight. How do you look and feel as you walk down the beach on that blazing summer day? Picture that look of surprise on a friend's face when you meet up with them looking fit and thin. (They didn't think you could do it did they? ;-p) You need to get leverage on yourself. Here are some other ways to do just that:

Get Inspired By Somebody: Find someone who started out where you are and read through their journey. Weight loss motivation can be piggy backed off someone else's efforts. Let them be the pioneer! You can model what they did and achieve the same goals. Personal blogs are great for this.

Personal Success Routine: This has been huge in helping me stay motivated for whatever my goals are. Sounds cheesy but hear me out... Wake up in the morning (at the same time)and go through a routine that pumps you up for the day. I'm not talking "Rocky training montage" here, I simply mean do a few things every morning that get you focused and prepared for the rest of the day. For example, if you work from home don't just get up and start working in your pjs... Instead get up and immediately get your body moving. Jumping jacks or even some stretching. Then shower and make yourself presentable and then take a few seconds to focus in your mind on what you want to accomplish that day. If you keep this routine going for a while you will hard code motivation into your brain. And not just for weight loss and exercise!

Get Your Target In Front of You Daily: Make sure you're always seeing your goals. Post them up in big letters on your wall. Type your goals into your screensaver (text option). Program into your phone calendar alerts to remind you of your goals once a day. (This works great!) But remember , your goals shouldn't be worded in a boring, pain in the butt way. Keep them laser focused and emotion stirring. Avoid: Lose ten pounds. Try: "Lose ten pounds so I when I see (enter ex's name here) at the benefit party next month his/her jaw is gonna hit the floor." Ok that's a bit long but it works! I would literally write that as a goal. lol.

Listen To Anthony Robbins: I thought his infomercials were pretty cheesy too. But I'm telling you, throwing him on your ipod and listening to him every morning will do wonders for your motivation. I include listening to him in my "personal success routine" every morning.

Implement these tweaks and I know you'll feel more of a burning drive to lose weight.

One Last Weight Loss Motivation Tip

To finish up, the last weight loss motivation tip I want to give you is to get somebody else involved. Having someone there to help encourage you and drive you can keep you motivated when all the other tactics I talked about above ebb. Because there is a natural ebb and flow to motivation. It's hard to keep going at a super high level at all times. And you know what? Your spouse and your friends, unfortunately, are not always the best people to give you this type of support.

Why?

Because of human nature. They may feel more comfortable with you staying at their level of fitness and health. It's why the show "The Biggest Loser" has been known to actually ruin some marriages! I recently came across a pretty cool online program that hooks you up with real life personal trainers. It's called Fitorbit and they match you with one of over 100 different trainers.
