Is Medifast A Dangerous Diet?
I've lost a very noticeable amount of weight on this diet and I'm often asked if such a rapid and dramatic weight loss is safe. Some of the comments I hear include: "are you getting enough calories?," "are you starving yourself," or "is Medifast at all dangerous?" I'll answer these questions in the following article and will also explain my response.
Medifast Was Developed And Tested By Doctors: First off, this diet was developed by physicians. It has also been repeatedly studied. One commonly referred to study was conducted at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and indicated that dieters on Medifast had twice as dramatic results (and lost twice as much weight) and stayed on their diet for twice as long as the diet that it was being compared against (the American Diabetic Association diet.) So, there is a good bit of science behind this diet and it's not at all a fad diet where you have to eat odd foods or fast for several days or anything like that.
You Get Enough To Eat, Consume A Wide Variety Of Foods, And Learn To Change Your Lifestyle: Many people think of the shakes when they think of Medifast. In fact, I've had people assume that I consume nothing but shakes. This just isn't the case. Although I like the shakes and probably consume one per day, there are many more options that I take advantage of. There are chilis, puddings, eggs, stews, soups, chips, oatmeals, etc.
Also, you eat six times per day on this plan. For five of the meals, you'll eat the company's prepackaged options of your choosing. Then, once per day, you'll eat what is called the "lean and green meal." This is a larger, fresh meal that you make on your own. It is mostly lean protein and vegetables. So, you are getting a good mix of low calorie, low carb foods already provided (that are very easy to assemble since the work is done for you) and you're also getting a wide variety of fresh foods. By covering the lean and green meal on your own, you're learning how to make sound, healthful choices, which you'll need once you meet your weight loss goals and go to the maintenance phase of the plan.
Is Ketosis Dangerous? One of the main reasons that this diet works so well is because it puts your body in a metabolic state called ketosis. Because you're eating a high amount of protein and a low amount of carbs, your body has to burn its own fat. This often results in pretty rapid weight loss. Many people ask me if tricking your body into turning on it's fat is really healthy. There are several studies which indicate that this is not harmful. Many people who fear that it is dangerous are in fact confusing it with a condition called ketoacidosis - which often occurs with diabetes. Ketoacidosisis can be dangerous, but is completely different.
My Experience: You don't need a doctor's prescription for Medifast, but my doctor does know about this diet and has encouraged it. In fact, all of my health indicators indicate that I'm actually much better off since I've started this. Obviously, my weight is way down, but my blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and resting heart rate have all dramatically improved. So, in my case, I would say that not only was this diet not dangerous, it was actually beneficial in my case. Of course, it's always advisable to follow the diet as directed and to discuss any concerns with your own doctor.
