What Will Funding Cuts Mean to Tourism?
Tourism is a major benifactor to many villages, towns, cities, counties, countries and continents, some places like the capital cities in many of the major countries like London, New York thrive in tourism whilst smaller villages will welcome any quite of tourism in the long run.
Take the United Kingdom for example on one side of the spectral there are the cities that don't rely on the need for tourism as a ways of having an healthy economy. Take London for example it is home to the symbols of the country people see all over the world. These are things such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, London Eye, London Zoo, the Natural History Museum and many more, also add to the fact that when it comes to major sporting events in the country they are usually held here so there is no doubt that most would want to visit there, also add to the fact that the queen and the government headquarters (Parliament) are located there its no surprised that t most tourists go there as totaling up to 15 million international visitors a year.
But what about places that aren't the capital city what about place that rely on tourism as one of their key contributors for the economy. An area like this is Northumberland where a major source of employment and income in this county comes from tourism. Now it may not have as many well known attractions as London but it still has a few that will be of interest to people such as the Alnwick Castle, Hjadrian's Wall and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This is a county that gets roughly 1.1 million visitors from the UK and around 50,000 that are foreign per year. It is estimated that they spend over 160 million in the county, which is a good amount of money.
But with recent changes to the law in the government that means there will changes to the way funding is given means that everything isn't looking rosy. In the past year the North East tourist attractions saw a drop of 38% visits in the months between July and September compared to the year before. Now more than ever the one of the key goals of this county is ensuring the protection of the industry that has garnered them millions of pounds despite the cuts that tourism promotion funding is getting. So how long will it be before Northumberland holiday homes have to cut back and be nothing but a passing comment.
But its not only in places like Northumberland that are affected but it is happening everywhere even London. The main tourist body VisitBritain is disappointed by these funding cuts that is happening all over the country especially as it comes in the run up to the London Olympics that will occur in 2012. It will have to relook at operations and have to review the what best course of action is. Tourism is important for the country and with the Olympics are these cuts justifiable in these hard times only time will tell.
