What Is Halloween

Halloween is celebrated on October 31th every year. It is a traditional festival in English-speaking countries like Australia, the Great Britain, the New Zealand, Canada, etc. On that eve, children stroll about from door to door in masks and are always given candies by householders. Halloween is short for "All Hallow Mas".

Two thousand years ago, an European pope established November 1st as "All Hallow Day". "Hallow" means holy. It is said that 500 years B.C., Celts who lived in Ireland and Scotland pushed the festival a day forward, namely October 31st. They thought this day is the end of summer and the beginning of winter and New Year. People believed that the dead would come back to their hometown and hunt for souls on living people so that they could get new life, which is the only way they can relive after death.
What Is Halloween

The living people are scared of being taken souls away, so they put off the lights and make the dead unable to find a living person. They even made up to scare the dead away. Later on people will relight the candles and start with the new year. It is said that the Celts even kill some living people to hold a memorial ceremony for the dead. In the first century A.D., the Romans who defeated the Celts gradually accepted the Halloween Festival, but they abolished to kill the living people in order to hold a memorial for the dead. The Romans wear scaring masks and make up as animals and masters in order to expel the demon. That is also the reason why most of the people today celebrate Halloween with strange make-ups. With time going on, the significance of Halloween becomes happy and positive gradually. The old saying that the dead hunt for souls to relive is abandoned and forgotten. Till now, the symbols of Halloween like witch and back cat always have kind and funny faces. After the Roman Empire Constantine had faith in God, he set the Christianity as the national religion.

The Empire asked all the people to believe in Christianity. A lot of pagan joined in the church and bring the pagan traditions in, as a result. As the church was not able to eliminate all the pagan traditions, some were consecrated, especially the dying festival on October 31st. In the 8th century, the Roman pope set November 1st as All Saints' Day so as to commemorate all the sacrificed devotee in history. Thus, October 31st is the eve before Halloween
