What Australian parents look for in a car

It is a question that many families ask themselves is it possible to get by with a small and economical sedan, or is the extra passenger and boot space of a station wagon or minivan essential? Often the need for something practical overcomes the desire for a sporty vehicle, but sometimes a compromise is possible, for instance, a sport sedan or even a sport wagon.

When purchasing a new family car, factors to consider include safety, reliability, price and boot size. Parents should think about how they will use the vehicle, what type of cargo they intend to carry, and how their needs may change during the years they own the vehicle. Many Australian parents focus on a vehicle with a roomy and versatile interior, plenty of boot space, and easy access. Four-door sedans and sporty wagons are suitable for families with one or two children, but bigger families might want to consider a vehicle with a larger boot area and more seats. Minivans and many SUVs and wagons can seat seven and sometimes even eight passengers. Minivans are a popular choice for families because they have easy access for passengers via big sliding doors and large, easy-to-access boot areas.

If you have one or two children, you can probably get by with a small or midsized sedan, which is usually less expensive and more fuel efficient than a larger car. While most cars are equipped to accommodate five people, the middle seat in the back is often uncomfortable, especially as your children become older.

A larger option would be a minivan, or seven-passenger wagon or SUV. All seven-passenger vehicles include a third-row seat that can be removed or folded down when not needed for passengers. An SUV could be considered an ideal solution because you don't have to struggle to get the bulky seat in and out, and because it's always there when you need it. Typically, the third-row seat in a wagon faces rearward and is small and suitable only for children. Check out how easy it is to get in and out of all seats. This can vary a lot from one vehicle to another. Another important factor for families is boot space. A vehicle with more boot space may be a better choice for larger families, those involved in outdoor activities, or families who need extra room for carrying sports equipment.

And last but not least, don't forget about the importance of fuel economy, as a larger vehicle will usually have lower fuel economy. Small, lightweight sedans will usually provide the best economy, while large, heavy SUVs are the worst. If you need more boot space than a sedan can provide, you might want to consider a station wagon. Some models provide as much usable boot space as an SUV, but are usually more economical.

Always remember that there are plenty of factors related to choosing the right family car for you though, and not all of them are related to size. Fuel economy, and how much repairs such as tyre replacement and auto glass chip repair are likely to cost you should be considered as well. Finally, don't rush into a decision, whatever model you go for will affect your whole family, so it's certainly worth giving a suitable amount of thought to.
