We opted for a trip out of town by rail on the 100 year old Cairns Kuranda Railway, which twists 21 miles up and through mountains, gorges and rain forests to the village of Kuranda.
We drove for 90 minutes north along the Marlin Coast and inland toward the rain forest after returning to Cairns.
From the nearby rain forest comes about 13 of the 19 families of ancient plant life still found on Earth.
From these, some date back to 130 million years. Built for logging, expect to pass by old rutted dirt tracks through the forest that are only passable via four wheel drive vehicles.
Looking at the rainforest can be done more leisurely through pull offs with one that opens on to an hour's easy stroll along a well marked trail.
From one tour service comes about environmentally sensitive trips into the rain forest starting from Silky Oaks and leading to a boat ride down the Daintree River.
The drive from Silky Oaks to one of the major gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, the old gold rush village of Port Douglas, was rather short.
There are charter boats fitted out for experienced scuba divers, sailboats for those who would rather skim atop the waves than dive beneath them and a fleet of twin hulled jet catamarans that ferry large groups to permanently moored platforms atop the reef.
You need not get all wet in order to view the beauty of the coral reef and its multicolored fish by boarding one of two glass-sided semi submersibles that offer 30 minute trips alongside the coral.
Snorkeling can also be done guided by trained marine biologists. It was a local hotel that we stayed in and aside from its swimming pool having private grottoes, one behind a waterfall, the locals frequented their open air coffee shop.
It was outside downtown Port Douglas where the famous Four Mile Beach can be found and it is where beautiful stretches of palm fringed white sand curve along the ocean.
A jump off point away from sea is Port Douglas and it allows you to have a different view of the northern Queensland environment.
One tableland high above the coast became a prime cattle raising area in the last century and today still in existence are some of the original homesteads on the old cattle ranches.
There is Wetherby which is the site of a 1870s homestead and still a working cattle station. What tourists are able to see is as a whole after it was opened by the family proprietors.
