Visit Zavareh Friday Mosque When You Take a Tour to Iran

Zavareh Friday Mosque is a fine example of the four-ivan mosques in Iran. Located in the oasis city of Zavareh in dasht-e Kavir, this mosque attracts many of the local people to say their prayers every Friday. Therefore, it is also called Masjid-e-Jami. Being situated in the small city of Zavareh, this mosque too is not very large. The courtyard is only 16 square meters. The four ivans are placed in the courtyard, which make it look much different from the Arabic-style buildings.

Style of Architecture

This style was later adopted in many other Islamic countries, especially in Egypt. When you take a tour to Iran and come here, you will see that the courtyard of the mosque has been inscribed with the date in which the building was constructed. This is very unlike the pattern followed in most Seljuk mosques.

This structure dates back to 11th century. It was built by Abu Taher Hossein bin Ghali bin Ahmad. The inscription on the south ivan shows that the mihrab was built 21 years later.

Description of the Structure

Zavareh Friday Mosque is rectangular in shape and lies in the middle with arcades on all sides. The north side of the building has a minaret which you can enter through a narrow passageway. Most people enter the structure from the north end of the eastern side of the mosque.

The west side has the other two entrances. Of the four ivans, the ones on the north and the south are at a greater height, because of the position of the mihrab. Pointed barrel vaults make up the arcades supported by rectangular and octagonal piers.

Artistic Decoration

The south side of Zavareh Friday Mosque has the dome chamber and is square in shape. Two arched openings are there to the east and west of the chamber. You will find Kufic inscriptions here when you come here on a tour to Iran.

The main entrance leads you to the mihrab which has been artistically decorated. There are two epigraphical frames here. The inscriptions are again in Kufic. You will also find inscriptions in Thulth script in here.
