A truly spectacular building, Vidhan Soudha stands tall majestically in Bangalore
, and is the seat of the legislature of the Karnataka state. Built in masterful architectural styles utilising style elements from the likes of the Indo-Saracenic, Rajasthani, Jharokha and Dravidian traditions, the building is truly beautiful to behold.Built in the 1950s, Vidhan Soudha was a concept initiated by Shri Kengal Hanumanthaiah, who was the then Chief Minister of Mysore, from the period 1951 to 1956. It is also said that he wished to build such a building from inspiration that had come to him from trips abroad. With the building being completed by the end of his term, it was officially opened by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. This grand and beauteous sight is sometimes affectionately known as the Taj Mahal of the South.
The building which is four tiers high is quite a marvel to take in. Within the building some distinctive areas would be the Legislative Assembly Chamber and the Legislative Council Chamber. Vidhan Soudha enveloping 60 acres of land is considered a symbol of sovereignty to the people of Bangalore. Exploring the premises alone is quite a feat with much walking to be undertaken to get from one place to another. With its sheer grandiosity, the Vidhan Soudha is truly an impressive sight, which has been synonymous with other fine buildings found across the globe.
With time, a replica of the Vidhan Soudha was erected south of the building and named Vishaka Soudha. Carried out by the Karnataka government, this building is home to ministries and legislative offices. Also, it should be noted that the High Court of Karnataka is found in the same land area as Vidhan Soudha in Cubbon Park.
