In fact, many supermarkets and other retailers now have what they call "gift card malls" where you can buy gift cards from dozens of retailers not in any way associated with the store that you are in.
While the rules vary from one retailer to the next and one state to another, one consideration when buying a gift card is that it might have an expiration date. You need to understand the rules of the card you are buying as a gift. You also should consider the person you are buying for, whether they would shop at that store, or whether they even have access to a particular store.
As you try to resolve the conflict in your mind over giving cash or a gift card as a gift in the first place, and then decide which one you are going to give, don't forget to buy enough Christmas cards to use as the gift wrap for these gifts. Even if you are not thrilled with the idea of giving these types of gifts, you can be sure that the recipients will be happy about them.
