Treatment Of Psoriasis

Treatment Of Psoriasis

Psoriasis has no cure, but treatment is. There is no way to prevent the disease, although it is possible to control the recurrence. Treatment of psoriasis depends on the clinical presentation may vary from simple topical application of medication even more complex treatment. Response to treatment also varies widely from patient to patient and the emotional component should not be overlooked.

A healthy lifestyle, avoiding stress will contribute to improvement. There is no way to permanently end to psoriasis, but it is possible to achieve complete remission, resulting in a clinical cure. It is not yet possible, however, assert that the disease will not return after the disappearance of symptoms.

There are four (4) main types of therapy for psoriasis: Topics, Phototherapy, Systemic Therapy and Biologic Therapies.

TopicsTreatment Of Psoriasis

Topical treatments are normally prescribed for mild to moderate psoriasis, ie, when psoriasis affects 30% or less of the body surface area. Creams and ointments are used directly in the affected regions.

They are: Anthralin, coal tar, tarazoteno, derivatives of vitamin D3 (calcipotriol), corticosteroids (pimecrolimus and tacrolimus).

Phototherapy

Therapeutic technique involving the issue and painless artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB), provided through special devices in the form of cabin fluorescent lighting. When associated with drugs, psoralens, which are photo active substances, is called PUVA therapy. Can be used only UVB form or in a usual type known as narrow-band.

Staterooms are special lamps which the patient stays for a few minutes exposed to the diseased skin and healthy skin protected by special clothing or sunscreen. Sessions are weekly and duration of treatment will depend on the degree of improvement in the lesions.

The Phototherapy has the advantage, relative to the sun, not dependent on climatic factors such as season, clouds and time for better continuity and success of treatment, and greater security at a dose of ultraviolet radiation, thus, the occurrence of burn can occur, but is exceptional.

The most common side effects of phototherapy are skin aging and increased risk of skin cancer.

Systemic therapy

Is the use of a drug for a period of time, either orally or in the form of injection. Featured in moderate and severe cases and patients who could not obtain a result with topical treatment. The most commonly used are: Methotrexate, cyclosporine, acitretin, oral retinoids.

The majority of systemic treatment, should not be used for pregnant women as they can cause congenital anomalies in the fetus. However you must use good judgment to assess the risk / benefit ratio of therapy and to individualize therapy for each woman.

Biological therapies

The organic intended to some very specific immune response, as opposed to systemic therapy (immunosuppressants) that suppress the entire immune system. Because of this, should theoretically have fewer side effects than systemic drugs, however, there was sufficient time for research to prove it. In addition, some biological control are quite effective in psoriatic arthritis.

There are currently five (5) for developing the biological treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis:

- Efalizumab

- Alefacept

- Etarnecept

- InfliximabTreatment Of Psoriasis

- Adalimumab

The more information you gather about therapies available and what to expect, plus be able to control their psoriasis.

The disease requires constant control, fidelity to the procedure used against psoriasis, incidentally, is fundamental. By having a chronic disease, the psoriasis can not give up on the first try. "It's as if they had diabetes or hypertension. The control is permanent and a rotation of treatments can prevent side effects".
