Treatment For Urticaria

Treatment For Urticaria

If you have ever gotten a case of hives before-as virtually everyone has-what you

have experienced is a condition known in medical circles as urticaria. If you are lucky, the condition likely cleared up in a few hours, without the use of any topical solution or medication. For some people however, the condition can have much more serious implications and require more intensive treatment for urticaria.

For most people, urticaria is caused by a specific trigger, which may be food or some types of medication. For other people, an episode of urticaria may be caused by friction or pressure on the skin, either from clothing or some other object that comes in frequent contact with the skin. Still other cases of hives are more difficult to diagnose, and it may take considerable time and extensive allergy testing to determine the actual cause.

If the specific triggers of your condition have been identified, treatment of urticaria will basically involve avoiding these triggers. If it is a certain type of food for example, all you have to do is to avoid eating it. If urticaria is caused by some type of medication, you can ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative that works the same way without the side effects. For cases of pressure or friction urticaria, you will either have to avoid the object that cases your skin to breakout or modify the object itself or your usage of it in order to avoid breaking out in hives.

Some cases of urticaria will not respond so readily to simply removing the trigger. If the hives don't disappear after several hours or if they actually increase in number and severity, you will have to seek immediate medical attention. Keep in mind that while hives aren't usually serious, they can indicate a more serious medical condition that will require immediate treatment. Even if your doctor determines that there isn't a more serious underlying condition, you will still need immediate treatment for urticaria. In some people, an allergic reaction can have devastating effects, and may cause difficulty in breathing, dizziness, tightness in the chest, and extensive swelling. Treatment For Urticaria

Antihistamines have long been the favored options for the treatment of urticaria. Most people will respond quickly to antihistamines, and any one who is especially predisposed to hives should always have some in his or her medicine cabinet. However, you should be aware that antihistamines come in first generation and second generation varieties, with the former known for causing drowsiness. Although both types of antihistamines are generally pretty effective treatment for urticaria, you may want to take the first generation antihistamines only at night when drowsiness will not be a problem. For daytime use, you can go ahead and use the second generation antihistamines without worrying about feeling sluggish or woozy.

Some of the simplest methods for the treatment of urticaria are also the most effective. You might find that a lukewarm water soak is all you need to bring down the swelling and could provide all the relief you need.
