There are travel agent jobs at every level, including the cashier at the bureau de change, the holiday sales person in the travel agent and a whole architecture of background staff and roles, which includes positions requiring qualifications at every level.Travel itself, of course, is a global brand travel packages are what get a large proportion of the travelling public out of the country. So, some of the most important travel industry jobs fall to the men and women employed to create those packages in the first place.
The skills required for a travel brand manager are multifarious - organisation, an affinity with people, creativity and the ability to manage large projects to a successful conclusion. These travel agent jobs are usually taken by people with training and a degree in hospitality management, and can command significant starting salaries.
This is not to say that front line travel agent jobs are any less important to the industry. And they can be very rewarding to. One of the most challenging and rewarding travel industry jobs is the customer services department without which the industry couldnt serve the public in the way that it does.
Obviously all industries selling products are ultimately in the business of customer service but there is something about the travel industry that becomes explicitly about serving customers. Because the whole package, from booking the holiday to travelling and changing money, is so dependent on the actions of others, the customer service department becomes the front face of the whole industry.
To do these travel agent jobs, you need to be a particular kind of person preferably travelled yourself, with an engaging personality and a love of interacting with other people. You need to be able to remain polite under potentially stressful circumstances (you only have to imagine the last time you saw a flight cancelled to understand that). And you have to be able to deliver a brand-centric service (where your actions embody the message delivered by your brand) while making every customer feel empathised with.
Travel industry jobs offer everyone opportunities for movement and career advancement. By its very nature the travel industry requires its employees to know something about the product they are selling and that means trips out to the destinations involved in your packages, plus of course the potential to physically move to another country.
Be aware that many travel agent jobs carry the potential for travel in a slightly different way in that you get to go to a lot of places but rarely get to fully enjoy them. That said, you do always end up with a much broader set of world experiences than you would if you were just sitting in an office all day!
