Tourist Guide To Ambergris Cay

Tourist Guide To Ambergris Cay

Ambergris Cay is the biggest and most developed island in Belize

. This island, located at the north east of Belize City is no more than 25 miles in length and is only one mile wide. Ambergris Cay is mainly a huge mangrove swamp surrounded by large sandy beaches. As the large hotels and tourist complexes are forbidden from being constructed, the island remains a paradise for relaxed tourists that come here in search of a wilder type of paradise, one without hotels and crowded beaches. The main town on the island is San Pedro. Besides this small town, lots of even smaller settlements are scattered across the island shores and linked through a road system to San Pedro.

Although the whole island used to be only for fishing by the locals, with the advent of the mass tourism forcing its reformation starting with 1970 when it became an important tourist attraction. The natural untainted feel and the relative cheap prices compared with the nearby destinations makes Ambergris Cay a top destination for anyone that looks for a budget trip with the comfort of a luxury vacation.

One of the main tourist attractions in Ambergris Cay is the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest coral reef barrier in the world, surpassed only by the Great Barrier Reef located in North Australia. This coral barrier stretches for more than 300 km and offers incredible diving sites where tourists can witness some of the most beautiful underwater scenery in the world.

Besides scuba diving to see the reefs, a tourist can enjoy a great time at the beach with plenty of sun and warm water, mangrove trips, yachting and swimming. Ambergris Cay is a haven for anyone that likes access to sun, water and sand in a relaxed manner. Tourist Guide To Ambergris Cay

Getting around Ambergris Cay is simple. Three main streets cross the entire island from north to south and they are connected by couple of unpaved smaller streets to form a small but efficient road network. The lack of paved streets can pose a problem during the rainy season when the mud and the erosion slow down traffic.

There are some cars on the island, but usually they are not needed as the entire island is small enough to be explored by foot or by bicycle. You can get other great transportation options such as a golf cart or water cabs which are present all over the place. The prices are quite affordable and the fun factor is assured.

Most hotels and motels are located in and around San Pedro. The prices vary according to service quality. Some hotels have their own restaurants while others offer accommodation only. The service quality is generally great while the costs are quite low, making a trip to the Ambergris Cay not only an unforgettable experience but also a great budget solution.
