A large number of people are leaving their office jobs behind and training for a more hands-on career.Research by the Training and Development Agency for Schools revealed that 20 per cent of male graduates currently working in office-based jobs are thinking of switching career.The study found that 62 per cent of those wanting to ditch their office jobs were interested in taking plumbing courses and electrical courses as they were looking for a career in the construction industry.Graham Green, author of The Career Change Handbook, told the Independent that an increasing number of employees who have become disillusioned with their current career path are not afraid to switch jobs.He told the newspaper: "People often get stuck in a profession they thought was a good idea when they left school or university, but then wake up to the fact they're not enjoying it and don't want to carry on doing it for the next 20 years."Mr Green went onto say that it was important for people to research information about the various plumbing courses and electrical courses on offer before embarking on a complete career change."At the very least, you should talk to someone already involved in the industry who can tell you about what it's really like," he told the publication.The Independent has advised people that becoming a fully qualified plumber is not achievable overnight through crash plumbing courses and requires a training period of around three years.City & Guilds NVQ 6129 level 2 is the required foundation course for beginner plumbers and it will allow people the ability to progress onto NVQ level 3.People might be able to ask for financial assistance before paying for plumbing courses as there is support available for all ages but especially those aged between 16 and 24.The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE) has told potential plumbers not to expect the massive salaries that have been sensationalised by the media once they have completed plumbing courses although the job does provide a healthy wage.Self-employed plumbers earn on average around 30,000 to 40,000, which will be deducted by costs such as tax, overheads and insurance.An IPHE spokesman told the Independent: "If you're working for yourself, a lot of what you earn will depend on how much time and effort you put in."The Independent recommended that people talk to anyone they have financial commitments to before funding plumbing courses and electrical courses.
