Three Things Every Kid Should Know About Fire Safety Signs

Fire safety signs save lives. During emergencies, especially in enclosed buildings and other similar venues, knowledge of the symbols illustrated in the signs will provide building occupants regarding related information that they need during such crucial times. Using pictograms, these signs will provide directions as to the location of equipment nearby; teach you how to use an automatic fire extinguisher, where to get adequate water supply, or to sound an alarm for the other building occupants; as well as show you where fire exits are, among other things. Thus, it is very important that one understands what these symbols mean so that you can properly directed during emergencies.

Especially where kids fire safety is concerned, it is important that safety signs conform to standards so that they are easily understood, even by children. Here is a rundown of useful information individual need to know regarding the various characteristics and purposes of basic safety signs.

Standards

In the UK, these safety signs are covered by the recommendations for fire safety signs (BS 5499-1: 19902). Through this standard, the design, colour, shape, and characteristics of such safety signs are regulated. If a series of these safety signs are used in the same building, it is important that all of them have a uniform format so that young readers can easily spot them, ensuring kids fire safety in that building. Generally, safety signs provide warnings for hazards, identify escape routes, indicate the location of equipment such as an automatic extinguisher, and provide instructions as to the proper use of equipment within the buildings premises.Three Things Every Kid Should Know About Fire Safety Signs

Types and Classifications

Under UK standards, there are generally six categories of safety signs: Warning, Prohibition, Fire equipment, Safe condition, Mandatory, and Supplementary. The Warning signs are usually triangular in shape, have black symbols or text on a yellow background, completed by a black triangular band. An example of this type of sign is one which says, Caution: Risk of Danger.

Prohibition signs have a circular shape with a cross band. This type of sign usually features a black symbol on a white background inside a red circle with a red bar. A No Smoking sign is a typical example of this. In terms of kids fire safety, related Fire equipment signs have a square shape with a white symbol or text on a bright red background. A sign which points to an automatic extinguisher is one example of this type of sign. Safe condition signs are typified by the Fire Exit sign. These signs are usually made of white symbol or text on a green background. Finally, Supplementary signs have a square or oblong shape and have a black text on a white background.

Use of pictograms

One important feature of these safety signs are the pictograms depicting different images providing certain instructions and directions to the readers. Pictograms are more advantageous in that they are easier for young readers to understand and are more effective in ensuring safety, especially within school premises. These pictograms may be combined with Supplementary signs that have words or text to reinforce the warning or instruction being provided.
