Reading methods are divided into four. The first is the phonics wherein children are being taught about the alphabet first. From there, kids will learn how to blend letters together.

The second reading method is called the "look and say" method. This is one method wherein children are taught how to recognize the whole word instead of relying on the sounds of the letters that form them. This is also that method where teachers pronounce the word and their pupils repeat after them.

As for the third method which is known as the language experience approach, the student actually learns how to read on his own. Your kids may start drawing some things then you will write the description of the drawing. You can continue to collect all the drawings the child makes then keep on writing descriptions of that drawing.

Lastly, the fourth method is called the context support method. In here, you should encourage the child to choose books or topics they are interested about. Know what your child likes and then start from simple books with pictures of these items.Free Online Reading Tools for Kids

With all these four reading methods, you will be able to find an available tool online. Examples of free tools are as follows:

1. Teacher Tap. This is an interactive website that includes games and other activities that will teach your kids to read. It also has simulations, quizzes, puzzles, drills and practice games.

2. Starfall. This is a free website that teaches kids to read with the phonics method. This is specifically made for preschoolers, kindergarten pupils and first graders. Tools include "ABCs: Let's Get Ready to Read", "Learn to Read", "It's Fun to Read" and "I'm Reading." This is a free public service that started in 2002.

3. Learning Abled Kids. This site provides free reading tests that track the reading progress of dyslexic children. This focuses on three separate reading skills namely reading decoding, reading fluency and reading comprehension.

4. ABC, Mommy and Me. This is a site that teaches children phonics. The tool by David Lumerman actually helps your kids learn the sounds of each letter by simply clicking on what appears on the screen. Click on the upper case letter and a mommy's voice will be heard while saying the sound of that letter. Click the lower case letter and a child's voice will be heard instead.

5. Learning Planet. This is more than just a reading website. It will also help if you want to teach your kids how to count.

6. The Hungry Thing. This is one tool that teaches kids to read by using rhyming words. The idea is to help kids to match pictures that rhyme.

7. Chicken Stacker. This tool focuses on proper pronunciation of vowel sounds. Let your kids click over the word that produces the appropriate vowel sound.

8. Name Talk. This is a ReadWriteThink tool that allows primary or kinder-2 students to connect the letter with its corresponding sound.

There are also reading tools that teach your child about spelling and reading grammar. Some also involve general activities that will teach them how to read. You can also use free online storybook sites for this learning endeavor.
