. Of course, the laser equipment used is especially suited for medical applications since the human body is indeed different from metal. With such a broad range of applications, it comes as no surprise if the use of lasers in dentistry is an emerging field. However, like all emerging fields, there are controversies associated with laser use in dental procedures. Still, it is good to know that with each passing year, the technology is gaining currency as one of the safest, fastest and most effective equipment for the treatment of various dental health issues. Issues Between Dental Practitioners The United States Food and Drug Administration have granted approval for the use of lasers in the practice of dentistry since 1994. We can safely surmise that this approval was issued based on numerous tests on the safety and efficacy of lasers for human use specifically on the teeth and mouth. However, it must be noted that despite such governmental approval for lasers in dentistry, the Seal of Approval from the American Dental Association has yet to be granted on any of the laser systems available for dental use in the market today. This is the seal that provides the assurance for dentists that the device meets the association's standards for safety and efficacy. Still, the ADA remains cautiously optimistic when it comes to this matter for indeed lasers do have their uses in the fields of medicine and dentistry. Again, despite said cautious optimism by the ADA, lasers are still used by many dentists to treat a variety of dental ailment including:
Tooth decay and gum diseases - Lasers are used in the removal of decay, preparation of the enamel for the filling as well as in hardening said filling. Also, lasers are utilized for gum reshaping and removing bacteria in root canal procedures.
Teeth whitening - This is probably the most popular use of lasers in dentistry where the peroxide bleaching solution is activated by the application of laser energy. In turn, the whitening process provides faster results.
Lesion Removal - lasers are also utilized in the removal of mouth lesions and in the pain relief of canker sores. Basically, the most important thing to remember when using lasers for dental purposes is to make sure that you have adequate training and experience on the technology. Pros and Cons for Patients If you are the patient, there are also issues regarding the use of lasers in dentistry. On one hand, you are less likely to feel pain with certain procedures and, hence, there is lesser need for local anesthetics. And since there is lesser need for the use of a dental drill, you will feel more comfortable with the procedure being performed on your teeth. On the other hand, laser treatments are not exactly affordable on an ordinary dental budget. This is because laser equipment can cost around $40,000 while the traditional dental drill costs just $600 at most. So, which side of the fence should you be on in the issue regarding lasers in dentistry? Well, none really. The important thing is that you ensure that your dentist is competent in the use of lasers and that you have thoroughly discussed your options with him.
