The Top Five London Accident Blackspots
The top five most dangerous London accident Blackspots are
1) The junction of the congested A406 and Romford Road at Redbridge 79 accidents.
2) The Elephant And Castle Roundabout 77 accidents.
There were 64 accidents in 2005 (over 1 every week) and it has got progressively worse.
In the 3 year period ending Sept 2010 there have been 77 collisions. A particularly unpleasant one was in April when 37-year-old fitness instructor Meryem Ozekman, from Southwark was crushed by a turning lorry.
It is reported that significant improvements will now be carried out and completed in early 2011, it is hoped that this 2.9 million project will not be affected by governments spending cuts.
3) In third place is the junction of Stockley Road with Holloway Lane in Hillingdon, with around 76 accidents a year; road markings and signs have now been improved.
4) The A406 and the A10 in Edmonton "73 collisions. Traffic lights are expected to reduce the number of accidents.
5) The A12 Eastern Avenue junction with the A406 in Redbridge where there are around 68 crashes a year.
Other Blackspots
The approach to the Blackwall Tunnel.A series of crashes - including one fatality - forced the installation of an antiskid surface on the northern approach and so this blackspot is not as bad as it used to b (54 accidents).
Vauhxall cross. This junction was remodelled and so is not in the top 5.(53 accidents).
A bend in Coopersale Street, Fiddlers Hamlet, near Epping, sees crashes on a regular basis and residents say they are sick of the sound of screeching brakes.
Near St Saviour"s Church in Markhouse Road, Walthamstow, where cars have repeatedly colliding with a traffic island. There was a head-on smash when a driver swerved to avoid the island (as he overtook a bus) and ploughed straight into a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Some SatNav systems show accident blackspots:-
Road Angel gives warnings of approaching safety cameras and road blackspots.
PogoDrive has speed camera and accident blackspot alerts.
On some SatNav systems, e.g. the TomTom accident blackspots can be added by classifying them as POI (points of interest).
Accident Blackspots and Speed Cameras
We are led to believe that speed cameras are placed at accident blackspots and not at locations where they are best at raising money from speeding fines.Comments on the internet say that this is not true. For example Malcolm Cupis of Birtol UK purchased a Road Angel and says "Cameras often are not at blackspots and most cameras seem to be sited on roads which have had limits arbitrarily reduced from NSL to 30/40mph."He concludes"They are there to make money".
Conclusion
Increasingly people who travel by car use GPS and SatNav devices to avoid speeding fines.Road accident blackspot statistics should be used to determine the location of speed cameras.If this happened than SatNav and GPS road traffic devices would only need to identify speed camera locations.Motorists would identify speed cameras with accident blackspots and realise they were not just revenue raisers.
