The Siberian Husky Dog

The Husky dog you see in Lapland is known as the Siberian husky dog and these beautiful dogs will be seen plentiful in Lapland on Husky safaris and in and around the Husky farms. The Siberian Husky Dog is a medium sized wolf like dog with a very thick, dense coat.

Huskies are one of the most energetic and lively breeds who are extremely resilient. They are used to living in a very harsh environment and are suited to the weather in Lapland perfectly. Siberian Huskies were bred in North Eastern Asia for pulling heavy loads in very difficult conditions. The Huskies were also very important during the Gold rush in Alaska and they later entered the USA and Canada. Originally Siberian Huskies were used as work dogs to pull heavy loads and sledges but they quickly became popular as pets as many people warmed to their kind nature.

The Husky dog is first and foremost a work dog which is instilled within its nature and they love nothing better than doing the one thing they love which is running through the snowy forests of Lapland pulling a sleigh. The Siberian husky is a friendly dog which is what makes them popular as pets but they are also fiercely independent, they react well to training and really need to be stimulated daily in order to fulfil their curious nature. Their need to run largely comes from their in bred ancestry and many owners who have these dogs as pets will know only too well how fast and far a Siberian husky will run once off the lead. They are dogs that need a lot of stimulation and are largely very intelligent dogs which make them ideal for all sorts of training and they respond very well to commands and orders. When Siberian Huskies are being trained as sled dogs, they will certainly build a very close bond with their trainer and will over time only want to respond to that one trainer. They will watch their every move and if you have the chance to go on a husky safari, you should take the time to watch the dogs and how they interact with their trainers.

Siberian huskies are very sociable and should really not be kept alone, they need to be part of a larger group of dogs or as part of a family, because of their intelligence, Siberian Huskies have been known to mimic the actions of their trainers and it isn't unusual for them to learn to open doors, refrigerators and even work out how to switch lights on and off, now that's what I call intelligence.
