The English Teacher's Role in an Age of E-Learning

One of the main obstacles to learning English for many people is the inability to maintain some regularity in their studies

. Work and personal commitments make it common to see students beginning a course with much enthusiasm, but soon having to drop out half-way because of an excessive workload, a sudden flood of business meetings or unexpected trips. It is clear that today's language learners need a great deal of flexibility in their study programs. Enter internet. Today it is possible for people with an internet connection to study virtually anything at their own convenience following a complete course without time or geographical restrictions. What's more, a course can be followed even without a teacher. Studying English is no exception. Online English courses have given the students the possibility to study grammar, learn new vocabulary, practise listening and pronunciation, and even evaluate themselves completely on their own: any time, any place. They can pick up where they left off whenever they find the time, and repeat lessons as often as they feel is necessary. So, where does this leave the teacher? It would be a mistake to assume that a teacher can be left out of the equation in successfully learning a language. Some people may have specific needs when studying a language, but naturally in most cases the main objective is in fact being able to hold a conversation. Like in training for a sport, you learn the rules of the game and get in shape ultimately so you can play the sport as best you can. The teacher's function is then pretty much narrowed down to that of an interlocutor helping students with conversation skills and oral expression, but it is of course a crucial aspect of language learning if fluent communication is the goal. This vital element in studying a language makes Blended-Learning (a combination of online study with conversation practice) an ideal solution for those with busy lifestyles. Here, the teacher's role is essentially to use all the resources available to them to provide the student with a variety of scenarios and contexts in which to exercise their English, while the student works independently at improving grammar, vocabulary and listening. Since learning a language is fundamentally a way of bringing ourselves closer to people, the human element in language learning becomes especially important. A teacher's direct support and feedback is necessary for students to feel that they are truly reaching their objective of acquiring the tools to connect with another person. Teachers need to find ways of motivating their students such as pointing out their progress and not just correcting their mistakes. Although online courses are an excellent way for students to keep their English in form, teachers can give students extra support by reminding them of the many ways they can incorporate English practice into their daily activities. Beyond the classroom and the online exercises English appears on advertising, food and clothing labels, pop songs among other places. News and many TV programs can be watched in English or with subtitles. We can show our students how they can take advantage of all this to keep their English level constantly improving simply by developing some regular habits. In an age where learning as we now it is undergoing enormous transformation, it's important to realize that the English teacher's true role is not diminished by this new form of learning, but rather enhanced by it. Now that the student is provided with a way to take a large part of their learning into their own hands, the teacher is (partially) freed of these tasks and enabled to use class time to really guide students throughout he study process, and come closer to reaching that goal of converting the English learner into an English speaker. www.inenglish.es
