Taking a Trip to Alnwick and Northumberland
Share: With the ever-increasing cost of hotels, holidaying abroad
, and the damage to the environment caused by taking long haul flights, taking a self-catering or bed and breakfast holiday in the United Kingdom can be a wonderful alternative. The north east of England offers a tremendous variety of sites and sounds for a holidaying tourist, and Northumberland is great example of what the north east has to offer.
Though travelling to the north for people living in the south can seem like a daunting prospect, there are many alternatives available. It is a day trip by car for even the further reaches of Britain. Spending the day travelling by car and seeing all the sites as you drive by can be a great trip for the family. Inexpensive trips by coach, train, or plane are also readily available.
There are accommodation options available for every person's tastes and needs. Rather than spend most of your holiday budget on an expensive hotel somewhere out of the way, Northumberland offers a wide variety of bed and breakfast and self-catering lodges, cottages, and holiday cottages all over the county. Finding a centrally located place to stay is essential when spending a holiday touring the countryside. Swarland old hall situated between Alnwick and Newcastle and minutes from the coast is a great example of what Northumberland has to offer. Self-catering lodges and bed and breakfast accommodations are available all year round at very competitive rates.
Alnwick can be found in the county's northwest, and it is a perfect central location for a holiday. There are many tourist locations situated in and around Alnwick, and its close proximity to the coast makes it easy for day trips to the seaside. Alnwick is also just 30 miles north of Newcastle, which reached the finals for European City of Culture for 2008. Alnwick castle is the perfect example of the things to see and do around Alnwick. The castle is situated on extensive grounds and gardens that can all be explored for under 25 for the whole family. Bailiffgate Museum situated on the north side of Alnwick is an inexpensive way to experience the history of Northumberland. There is a wide range of art and interactive displays to engage visitors of any age.
Share: There is plenty more to see in Northumberland. It is a good idea to join the National Trust or English Heritage. Joining one or both of these will give you free access to many of the historic sites all over Britain. Hadrian's Wall, which the ruins of the Roman wall built all the way across the top of England, is well worth visiting. There are many forts and other points of interest along the Wall, as well. Along the Northumberland Coast, there are many historic ruins and buildings. Dunstanburgh Castle, just a few miles north east of Alnwick, is a very interesting ruin overlooking the sea. Newcastle, just a short drive south of Alnwick, is full of modern museums, bridges, and shops for the days that you don't feel like seeing the historical side of Northumberland.
A self-catering or bed and breakfast holiday can offer a lot for the British tourist. There are many websites available with information about touring Northumberland and around Alnwick. Exploring the country and all it has to offer can be a great holiday alternative for those holiday makers looking for something a little different this summer. Self-catering can be a great way to save money and to free up more alternatives of what you can do while travelling. There is no doubt that the popularity of self-catering and bed and breakfast holidays will continue to increase.
