Ramadan Umrah Visa Requirements for UK Pilgrims
British passport holders travelling for Umrah need two things, not one: a valid visa to enter Saudi Arabia, and a separate permit booked through the official Nusuk platform to actually perform Umrah at the Masjid al-Haram. Many pilgrims discover the second requirement far too late, so it is worth understanding both before you book anything.
The good news is that when you book
Cheap Ramadan Umrah packages from uk through a licensed agent, the visa side is normally arranged for you as part of the package. Here is what the requirements actually are, so you know what is being done on your behalf and what remains your responsibility.
Which visa do UK pilgrims need?
There are two common routes for British passport holders. The Saudi tourist eVisa is the more flexible option: it is applied for online, is typically valid for a year with multiple entries, and permits Umrah outside the Hajj season. Alternatively, a dedicated Umrah visa can be issued, usually arranged through a licensed travel agent as part of a package. Either route gets you into the country; neither, on its own, gets you into the Mataf.
Nusuk permits are mandatory
This is the requirement most pilgrims miss. Regardless of which visa you hold, you must obtain an Umrah permit through the official Nusuk platform. Security staff at the Haram scan the QR code the app generates, and without an active permit, entry to the Mataf can be refused even with a perfectly valid visa. The same applies to the Rawdah in Madinah, which requires its own separate permit. Where you travel with an organised group, your operator will often book these collectively, though having your own account is still sensible.
Applying for your visa
Most UK pilgrims now complete the whole process digitally. If you are arranging your
Umrah visa online, the broad steps are as follows, though exact requirements can change and should always be checked against official Saudi sources before you apply.
- Check your passport has at least six months' validity from your date of arrival in Saudi Arabia, not from the date you apply.
- Apply through the official Saudi eVisa portal or through your licensed travel agent, making sure every name matches your passport exactly.
- Have your confirmed hotel booking and return flight details ready, as these are commonly requested.
- Register on the Nusuk platform and book your Umrah permit, and your Rawdah permit if visiting Madinah.
- Obtain your meningitis ACWY vaccination and keep the certificate with your travel documents.
Vaccination requirements
Saudi Arabia requires a valid meningococcal ACWY vaccination certificate for all pilgrims aged one year and over, and it must be administered at least ten days before you arrive. Certificates remain valid for several years depending on the vaccine type. Your GP or a travel clinic can arrange this, and you should not leave it to the last fortnight, since the ten-day rule is enforced.
Common mistakes that cause rejections
A handful of errors account for most refused applications, and all of them are avoidable:
- Calculating passport validity from the application date rather than the arrival date
- Name spellings that differ even slightly between the passport and the application
- Assuming the visa alone permits entry to the Haram, without a Nusuk permit
- Leaving the vaccination too late to meet the ten-day requirement
- Booking through an unlicensed agent, which can invalidate the whole arrangement
Timing your application for Ramadan
Ramadan is the busiest season of the year for visa processing, and applications can take considerably longer than the usual turnaround. Allow far more time than you think you need, and apply as soon as your booking is confirmed. It is also worth knowing that Umrah visa issuance closes several weeks before Hajj begins each year, so if your travel falls near that window, check the cut-off date carefully.
Why booking through a licensed agent helps
Saudi authorities have tightened requirements considerably, including verification of your accommodation booking, and have acted against operators failing to comply. Booking through a licensed, ATOL-protected agent means your visa, your verified hotel booking and your permits are handled together and correctly. It also means that if a requirement changes between booking and departure, someone is watching for it on your behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Can UK citizens perform Umrah on a tourist eVisa? Yes, outside the Hajj season. The tourist eVisa permits Umrah, but you must still obtain your Umrah permit through the Nusuk platform separately.
Do I really need a Nusuk permit?
Yes. Permits are checked by QR code at the Haram, and entry can be refused without one even if your visa is valid. The Rawdah in Madinah requires its own permit.
How long must my passport be valid?
At least six months from the date you arrive in Saudi Arabia, not from the date you apply. This catches people out regularly.
Which vaccination is required? Meningococcal ACWY, given at least ten days before arrival, for all pilgrims aged one year and over. Keep the certificate with your documents.
Do you arrange the visa for me?
Yes. Your Umrah visa is arranged as part of our packages, and we will guide you through the permit requirements too. Islamic Travel Agency UK is ATOL protected under licence 12192.
Please check before you travel
