Preserve Your Natural Teeth With Dental Implants

Are you missing teeth? Does your smile need an extra boost in restorative treatment

? If so, dental implants may be the right choice for replacing your missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are used to replace missing teeth, helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. The loss of teeth can have a significant impact on your self-esteem and health, which is due to the aesthetic implications as well as the potential bite problems and difficulty eating that may occur.

Protect your mouth and maintain your oral health by restoring your smile with dental implants. Dental implants can replicate your other teeth and will even feel like they are your own natural teeth. Depending on your consultation with your dentist, dental implants may be the only plausible choice for the restoration of the functionality of your teeth and the supporting structures.

Tooth Loss Occurs for Many Reasons

People who have lost teeth may feel too-self-conscious to smile, or sometimes even talk. Biting irregularities can also develop due to tooth loss leading to poor eating habits and secondary health problems, such as malnutrition. Tooth loss can occur because of:

Tooth decay

Root canal failure

Gum disease

Trauma to the mouth

Excessive wear and tear

Regardless of the source of tooth loss, dental implants may provide appropriate results to restore your smile.

The Dental Implant Process

Before the placement of your implants, your bone density will need to be assessed to ensure that you have sufficient quality and quantity of bone tissue available around where the implant will be placed. If there is not enough bone or significant bone loss has occurred due to periodontal disease, then you may need bone grafting before the implant is placed.

Once you have been assessed for proper bone density and the plan of treatment explained, the appropriate implant system and size of the implant will be selected and surgically placed. As the implant is securely placed into your jawbone, a protective screw cover or cap is placed over the implant and the gum tissue is sutured over the top.

The implant is then left to heal for approximately six months, which is a process called osseointegration. During osseointegration, the bone tissue around the implant grows onto the roughened surface of the implant so that it effectively becomes part of the jawbone and can securely hold a restoration in place. After healing is complete, the screw cover is removed and an abutment placed on the implant, which serves as an anchorage point to securely hold a restoration in place.

It is important to remember that dental implants are not for everyone. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have proper bone density and have a strong immune system. In every case, dental implants require strict oral hygiene. If you are missing teeth, contact your Lincoln Park dentist for further consultation.
