Available implants are many and all designed for various functions. They are made of titanium, a material known to fuss with the living bone pretty well. A complete evaluation is what you need from your dentist for recommendation of the suitable type for you. For that sort after smile, a single or multiple dental implant can be placed to your jaw bone and capped with a natural looking teeth.

Root Form Implants:

Closest in shape and size to the natural tooth root is the root form implants and are usually used for deep, wide bone to act as a base for replacement of a complete arc, or several teeth. When the implant is carefully set in place, the gum is closed with several stitches and the bone develops in and around the implant offering a very strong bond and creating a tough structural bond. When the healing process is over, the implant is uncovered to attach an abutment or an extension which then creates a very solid support for your new teeth or tooth.

Plate Form Implants:

This form of implant is required when the bone is narrow and the area cannot suit bone grafting. The plate form implant is flat and long so it can fit into the narrow jawbone. The number of incisions depends upon the number of implants being placed.

Sub-Periosteal Implants:

The sub-periosteal implant is custom made and designed to sit on top of the bone, but under the gums. When there is no enough bone height or width for either root form or plate form sub- periosteal implant is recommended. There are two ways to carry out this method,

1. The dual surgery method- A custom made implant is created at the dental laboratory to fit your jaw. From there, the jaw bone is exposed and the implant placed. Several stitches are used to close the gums and the replacement of the teeth is done.

2. The single surgery method- The dentists needs a special CT scan of your jawbone. To fabricate the custom made sub-periosteal to fit your jaw, a model is created at the dental laboratory. The jawbone is exposed and implant placed after which the gums are closed and stitched and the replacement teeth put in place.

Ramus-Frame Implants:

This can only be done to patients with a thin jawbone because they are placed at the back of the mouth and near the chin. You will have partial or full dentures fitted to the thin metal bar above the gum tissue which is visible when the gum heals.

Transosseous Implant:

This method can only be used to the lower jaw. The implant is bolted to the jawbone and fixed along the whole bottom half of the mouth. It is a very rare implant type and is not commonly used.
