Post Holiday Blues
Share: Now the holidays have passed, many of us are back to work to catch up on the work we may have let slip during the last month or two
. Many of us are also seeing an increase in workflow, and are therefore working longer hours.
This increase in work and stress causes many of us to feel a form of "post-holiday blues". Did you know your pet is probably experiencing something similar? While the last few months have probably seen a lot of excitement, between the decorations, the visitors, and the traveling, they may be starting to experience the blues as you settle into the winter routine, sans holidays.
What are the signs your pet may be experiencing the post-holiday blues? It's not what you may think:
Incessant Barking
Share: Is your dog barking more? Whether she barks when you're leaving the house, coming home, or while you're just sitting trying to relax a bit after a long day, if your dog is barking more than normal, she is trying to communicate with you. The message she is trying to give you: "I need some attention and a way to release some energy."
Not Another Mess!
If you've noticed your dog is making more of a mess than previously, whether it's eliminating where they shouldn't, digging into the garbage while you're gone, or chewing on those Prada shoes that were hidden in your closet, an increase in behaviors like this is a key indicator your pet is not getting the attention and exercise he needs.
Too Lethargic
When we think of "the blues", many of us think of depressed behavior like being insatiably tired regardless of how much sleep you get, inability to motivate yourself to do any tasks, etc. Unfortunately this same behavior is often ignored in our pets. Unless our dog exhibits negative behavior we don't particularly care for, we tend to think everything is fine. If your dog is lying around more, if you have to fight with him or her to go outside or to eat, this could be a problem with post-holiday blues. Untreated, this can lead to many health problems for your pet.
What To Do About Post-Holiday Blues
If you think your pet is experiencing the post-holiday blues, you'll want to help get them the socialization and exercise they crave. If you personally give your pet the extra exercise and attention they need due to your increased work schedule, this may be the perfect time to investigate some
doggie daycare. Even one or two days a week will make a marked impact on your dog's behavior. Typically doggie daycare will run $15-30 per day, depending on the location and amenities offered. Many doggie daycare facilities will offer discounts if you want to bring your dog in 3, 5 or 6 days a week. Most are open early morning so you can drop them off on your way to work and pick them up on your way home.
