Plastic Surgery Among Teens: Know More About It

Teens make up only about two percent of plastic surgeries that are performed to improve one's appearance as opposed to those that are performed as corrections to traumatic injuries, illness or birth defects.On the other hand, the number of procedures performed on youth between the ages of 13 and 19 has doubled in the last decade. It might be reassuring to keep in mind that most of those procedures are of the less-invasive type included under the umbrella of plastic surgery.
Laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, IPL treatment and chemical peels are the most commonly performed teen procedures. These procedures are generally performed without anesthesia, have few related side effects and require little to no recovery time. Rounding out the list of most common procedure were rhinoplasty (nose job) and otoplasty (ear pinning).
These are performed as outpatient surgeries under some type of anesthesia. While still less invasive than many plastic surgeries, these will both result in discomfort and possibly pain during recovery. Bulky dressings will need to be worn for a period of time to protect the surgical site and a patient's physical activity will be limited for a period of time.
Parents and their children should sit down and go over the full extent of the possible complications, the rocvering process required and the potential for scarring following the results. It's best to go over all non-surgical alternatives before deciding to go along with the surgical procedure.
A good majority of doctors will not perform certain plastic surgery procedures on teens until they know that the particular body part has fully developed. It's particularly important to comprehensively research and interview doctors. Families must find a surgeon with whom they comfortable enough with to share openly regarding both their goals and concerns related to the procedure.
Parents may initially be shocked to learn that their youth wants to voluntarily subject themselves to surgery. But doctors advise them to spend time listening to their children and to make an attempt to understand their feelings and goals, rather than dismissing them as being superficial.
An experienced doctor can help establish whether a teen is emotionally stable and understands the limitations of the surgery. A procedure may improve one aspect of how they look but it won't change their overall appearance. While it may well improve a teen's self-confidence, it won't guarantee more dates or popularity.
