It's well known in the UK that most people like to start their holidays at the weekend

. This is reflected in the travel news bulletins that we hear on the radio, which, every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, are full of announcements that major routes heading to our big resorts are busy, and often at a standstill.

So if you can do so, it makes sense to avoid travelling at these peak times, which run from midday on a Friday to early afternoon on Saturdays.

When you first do this, it might take some juggling of routines and a change of mindset but once you've experienced how much easier it can be to get to your destination when you aren't travelling at the same time as everyone else, you won't want to go back to doing it again.

You can choose your level of accommodation, from a self-catering family apartment, to a hotel where all your meals are laid on, depending on how independent you want to be. And once you arrive you'll be spoilt for choice over what to do. The little ones can get to see their favourite TV characters in person, or enjoy getting messy at the special arts and crafts sessions designed just for them. Or, of course, there's the indoor funfair which has all the gentler rides which smaller children love.
