Choosing A Family Dog

Having a pet dog is a wonderful experience, but picking out the right type of dog is a big problem

, especially if you have a family with young kids. When choosing a breed, you have to make sure that it fits your lifestyle. Below are a few things to consider when picking out the right dog for your family.

Size

How big is your home? Are you living in a house with a big lawn or back yard or are you living in an apartment in the city? Consider the dogs need for space. Big dogs obviously need a bigger room to more around while medium to small sized dogs are fine with small living spaces. Remember that you have to set up an area where the dog can feed, play and sleep. Some apartment owners will only approve of small to medium sized dogs to live with them so clear this out with the land lord.

Health and Diet

When it comes to health, big dogs generally live a little longer then small dogs, but illnesses like degenerative myelopathy are more common on them. Small dogs are generally healthier and are easier to handle. All dogs need to be taken to the vet every now and then for a check-up and their shots. Bigger dogs will need a diet that has more calcium and protein for their big bones and muscles. Some dog food brands have special mixes of big or small dogs choose one that fits to their needs.

Family

This is one of the most important considerations when choosing a family dog. How old are the children in the family? Are they ready to have a pet? Is the dog good around children? Some dogs, big or small, might be a bit too temperamental and may not mesh with children. You also have to take in consideration what the dog is for. Is its just a family pet or are you also getting it to protect your home and ask as a guard dog? Choose breeds that are famous for being friendly if youre after a family pet. If youre looking for a guard dog, look for one thats known for its intelligence and it loyalty.

The Dogs History

Sometimes, dogs carry over temperaments and illnesses from their parents. Illnesses like degenerative myelopathy are carried down so always ask about the health history of the dogs parents. Their temperament is also something to watch out for. Choose a dog that comes from a good line.
