Phonics As Reading Help For Kids

Phonics is a word you are probably familiar with if you are the parent of a child who is beginning to read

. In this article you will discover what to do to provide reading help for kids so they can learn to read with phonics.

Phonics, whats that? Its the system that teaches the relationship between words, letters and sounds, which is at the same time complex and simple. Its the relationship between words as spoken and writing. What we are talking about here is that there is a link between letters that are written down and the sounds of them. Students of phonics realise the nature of that relationship and can blend sounds to make words. They can then go on to put words together to form sentences...

'Sounding out' words is the strategic objective for early readers using phonics. Lets look at an example: phonics teaches that the letter P makes the sound 'p' and is the beginning of the word 'pool'. Now the student goes on to merge sounds to form words. Now this sounds easy doesnt it? However there are 26 letters in the alphabet and they form a total in 44 distinct sounds. From a phonics program the child learns how to decode common words and also spell them even in cases where they have not seen the word before.

Whats the big deal about phonics? The whole purpose of reading is to be able to understand things. Being able to read quickly without stumbling is the key to understanding and this is the core strength of phonics teaching. Students need adequate exposure to phonics skills and practising them in tandem with letter recognition and writing skills for example leads to the formation of reading competence.

How is phonics taught? The main ingredients of the system are the sequence and a systematic approach. Children need to be given ample opportunity to practice phonics skills before moving on to the next stage or module. Importantly children should be given books to read that are at the appropriate level and that incorporate the words that they have been learning in the phonics lessons. Reading with parents and teachers is very important so that mistakes can be corrected and guidance offered to reinforce the phonics lessons, and provide high quality reading help for kids.
