Using a personal shopper/stylist is something that many people are unsure about. It seems like an extravagance and an unnecessary luxury that is reserved purely for the rich and famous. The thing is, there are many people out there who feel uncomfortable in themselves. There are people who want to look a certain way but feel daunted by the prospect of achieving it.

Most people that use personal shoppers or stylists, are not whippet thin, glamorous super models who could make a sack look fabulous, they are real women (and sometimes men) who are very focused in other areas of their lives, and simply don't know how to maximize what their Mama gave them!

A personal stylist can work wonders, but if that is not an option, here are some tips, to style yourself.Personal styling made easy

1/ A stylist will tell you that you look great when you do. We don't do this for ourselves so much. Be kind to yourself. Get dressed, look in the mirror, check you look good, tell yourself you look good, and walk away. Spending hours agonizing over your appearance is only going to make you notice things that no one else will. Its pointless and can be destructive. Look and go!

2/ Be decisive and only buy what you love. NEVER just buy it because it's cheap, don't buy it because it looks ok, if you are not convinced, don't pay for it. Buy what you love, whether its $1 or $100 or $1000. If it makes you feel good, you'll wear it often, look great in it and project that you feel great in it.

3/ Be ruthless. Go through your existing wardrobe. Everyone is allowed to keep one or two 'when I lose weight I will fit into this' items. But only one or two. If this is most of your wardrobe, get rid. Buy clothes that fit your new shape and get on with life. Unless you are absolutely convinced you will get back into them, don't keep them there as a reminder. This also applies to anything pink, glittery or fluffy. Unless you are a showgirl or a 13 year old girl, it has to go.

4/ Wandering around the shops aimlessly can make you want to weep/go home/give up. When you shop with a personal shopper you have a plan. So make one yourself. What do you need? Where do you find the best clothes for you size/shape/taste? If you want to be in and out and the greatest efficiency, or just don't like shopping, go for a targeted approach!

5/ If you find something that looks good, and you can afford it, buy two. Like a great pair of jeans for example. Sometimes its tricky to find a pair that you feel good in and if you have a shape that is a little uncompromising, it can soul-destroying. Unless its a high fashion piece, classics and wardrobe staples are worth investing in, so buy two. Put one pair at the back of your wardrobe and wear for best, or use when the other pair finally wears out.

Just a few tips to keep the shopping stress-levels down and confidence in your appearance up.
