Non-Surgical Treatment of BPH Prostate Problem

Do you urinate frequently during the day? How many times do you wake up in the night to urinate? If there are other signs such as sensation of incomplete emptying, burning feeling during urination, hesitancy with reduced force of urine stream or enlarged prostate on rectal exam, they may be symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) or prostate enlargement which is common to men over 45. When your prostate enlarges, the tissue layer stops from expanding which makes the bladder wall thicker. Your bladder contracts although it contains only little quantity of urine making you urinate frequently. The bladder then becomes powerless and cannot empty itself anymore and some amounts of urine are retained causing irritability and discomfort.

When you visit your medical urologist, he will ask you for your health history and will let you undergo some tests to check on your bladder. These tests include stress tests where the patient is ask to relax and made to cough vigorously for any loss of urine. You will also have urinalysis to test for infection, urinary stones and other causes; blood tests will then be taken and examined for substances. Lastly, ultrasound, cystoscopy and urodynamics tests will be given to measure pressure in the bladder and urine flow and to expound on other possible causes.

BPH is one of the three common prostate problems. The other two are prostatis and prostate cancer. A number of non surgical procedures and devices have been developed to treat BPH. One of them is the transurethral technology which uses thin tubes inserted through the urethra to deliver controlled heat to the problematic parts of the prostate area. Transurethral procedures your doctor may recommend would be PVP (photoselective vaporization of the prostate), TUIP (transurethral incision of the prostate), TUMT (transurethral microwave thermotherapy) and TUNA (transurethral needle ablation). In France and Israel, they are having remarkable success in the procedure called transrectal hypothermia which uses a special applicator inserted in the rectum to elevate the temperature up to 43 degrees centigrade for one hour.

With naturopathic treatments, it includes physical medicine involving bladder exercises called "Kegel" and "Qi Gong" together with aerobic exercises. Use of hot and cold water therapy and regular gentle prostatic massage will do wonders for your prostate gland. Herbal medicines you can use under the supervision of a naturopathic physician are sal palmetto extract, beta-sitosterol, pygeum, rye grass and stinging nettle extracts to reduce enlarged prostate symptoms. Other effective non-invasive treatments are acupuncture, proper nutrition and diet. Just bear in mind that BPH is highly curable and a proper frame of mind and right attitude are critically important in dealing with this problem!
