DIY Teeth Whitening Treatments can be Dangerous

People who want to look younger through teeth whitening treatments should avoid going down the DIY route.Daily Mail journalist Anna Maxted reported that she decided to investigate the benefits of teeth whitening when her young daughter remarked on her discoloured smile and discovered that many DIY kits were potentially dangerous. Ms Maxted found that many DIY kits are available over the counter and internet which promised a dazzling white smile for a relatively cheap price compared to professional treatments and started to use them on a regular basis. She soon realised that some kits had components that were impractical and inconveniently messy, while others included ingredients which began to irritate her gums. Martin Fallowfield, a spokesman from the British Dental Association, told the newspaper that certain DIY teeth whitening kits included chlorine dioxide which is actually used to disinfect swimming pools. He said: "This won't necessarily be listed on the label, but it's a horrible ingredient; these kits are terribly dangerous to teeth they get the whitening effect by etching the surface of the tooth."Dr Fallowfield also told the Mail that chlorine dioxide can permanently destroy tooth enamel which will make teeth feel extremely sensitive and may potentially lead to them falling out. "People have no idea what ingredients are in these home kits and what they could be doing to their teeth," he told the newspaper. Teeth that lose their protective enamel coating are easily discoloured because they are more susceptible to foods and drinks which stain such as red wine, tea and coffee. Another potentially damaging ingredient found in DIY teeth whitening kits is hydrogen peroxide which can burn the throat, stomach and gut if significant amounts are ingested. Hydrogen peroxide can also damage gums if it spills out of ill-fitting mouth guards so it is always advisable to visit the dentist if you want teeth whitening treatments. Many quality dentists provide their patients with comfortable, customised trays containing whitening solution which allows them to practice at-home whitening without the risk of damaging their gums.In-practice treatments can include laser whitening procedures that involves coating the teeth with gel before a laser is applied which makes a smile appear whiter in around an hours time.People are advised not to have their teeth whitened in salons as the Daily Mail reported that the General Dental Council has received over 600 complaints about procedures performed by beauty therapists.
