New Potential Uses Of Lllt Treatments In The Dental Field

In a recent study published by Stephen Soos a number of dental procedures were studied to determine the effects of LLLT treatments on patients

. It has been theorized that this therapy can be used in place of many types of traditional treatments. In many cases the LLLT treatments showed an improvement in the heal time and pain management in patients without doing additional damage to the surrounding tissue, tooth or bed. If results are conclusive it is likely that these treatments will be applied on a more widespread basis.

One of the fields that LLLT in dentistry has seen significant success is in combating dentinal hypersensitivity. This condition is described as the breakdown of a tooth, either from damage or injury, causing the sensitive nerves inside to become exposed to the surrounding environment. This can cause discomfort for the patient when environmental factors such as cold foods come in contact with the nerve. LLLT has been shown to reduce the sensitivity of these nerves so that patients no will no longer suffer the chronic pain that is often associated with dentinal hypersensitivity.

Patients suffering from oral herpes have also seen benefits from using LLLT. Those who regularly deal with acute breakouts of the HSV1 virus have trouble visiting the dentist due to the increased sensitivity where sores are present. These blisters also contain traces of the virus which can be contagious. Normally, this virus can only be combated when the painful blisters appear in the mouth, but dental lasers have been shown to kill the HSV1 traces under the skin to help reduce the appearance of these blisters. With ongoing treatment over time, many patients report that they have stopped showing symptoms of oral herpes all together.

In a similar study, lasers in dentistry have been shown to improve the condition of those who had deep scaling in the mouth. In these cases the scaling was due to gingival growth which had penetrated deep into the gum line, causing a serious infection. Patients were given LLLT treatments at the picket just before the gingival scaling appeared at regular intervals to help combat the disease. As treatments progressed patients reported less bleeding from the scaled areas, less pain emanating from the infection and less discomfort after the treatment was applied.

These results were consistent and widely applied throughout the trials and with different levels of treatment from D-lase and KD-lase products.
