The Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port as well as its one and only major port situated along a river bank. Kolkata is also the third largest metro of the country. A city replete with culture, Kolkata was the former capital of the country and has played a significant role in shaping the history of the country. Kolkata is also known by many aliases like 'Cultural Capital of India', 'the city of Processions' and 'City of Joy' among others.

Both the cities are at a distance of almost two thousand kilometers from each other by road. The national highways NH 6 and National Highway 6 connects the two places. It will take more than 24 hours to reach from Mumbai to Kolkata by road. Hence, it is not advisable to travel to Kolkata from Mumbai by road as the distance between the cities is too large to undertake, especially while travelling with elders and small children. However, if one is adventurous even driving to Kolkata can be memorable experience.

But, the easiest way to reach to Kolkata from Mumbai is by air. There are many flights that fly between Mumbai and Kolkata. Moreover, there are many trains that connect the two places with each other. Trains to Kolkata depart from the CST and Lokamanya Tilak stations of Mumbai. The trains take almost 35 hours to cover the distance. Trains from Mumbai arrive in Kolkata at 2 stations - Howrah Jn (HWH) and Santragachi Jn (SRC). Some of the trains that ply form Mumbai to Kolkata are the Gitanjali Express (12859), Cstm Howrah Spl (0859), Howrah Sup Exp (12869), Cstm Hwh Duronto (12261) and Howrah Mail (12809) among others. Online booking facilities are available with the Indian railways website as well. Since it is a long journey, it is always better to book advance tickets.
