Moving With Kids Survival Kit
Moving day is a double-edged sword for families because it can be both exciting and tedious
, especially when you have children who are restless and have mixed feelings about leaving their old home. Here are some things you can do to make moving easier and even fun for your kids:Dont Try to Move in One Day
Unless you are under strict time constraints, dont try to complete your move in one day. Your kids will want more of your attention than you can give and they might already be out of sorts due to the fact that they are leaving all the familiar things and people from your old neighborhood behind. If you take an additional day or two, you can set up the kids rooms first and get them settled so that they can occupy themselves by making their new rooms feel like home, freeing you to unpack with less distraction and frenzy.
Pack a Play Box
Pack a box full of favorite toys and books for each child and mark it as First Off Truck or even keep it with you in your car on move day. Then, when you reach your new home and begin unpacking, take these boxes out first and put them in your childs new room and ask them to unpack. Chances are, your child will get caught up with their playthings and will be kept busy just long enough to you to get the rest of the move underway.
Make a Box Fort Kit
If the kids grow tired of setting up their rooms and playing with the items in their box of toys, you might find yourself scrambling to distract them once again when you dont have time for that. To avoid this scenario, make sure to keep a box of markers- maybe pop them in the glove box of your vehicle the night before- for the kids to draw on the moving boxes with. Once you are done unpacking a box, toss it in a pile and tell the kids that they can take any boxes from that pile to the yard where they can build a fort and then decorate it with drawings. Most likely, this will keep them busy and happy for hours.
Load Some Movies on the Laptop and Pack a Cooler
So, the kids have unpacked their play boxes, set up their bedrooms, and built a box fort in the yard, but you still arent done unpacking and it stands to reason that your kids have probably worked up an appetite by now. More than that, theyre out of things to do again. Packing a cooler full of drinks and snacks means that you dont have to stop mid-move to get or make something to eat. Make your kids an exciting proposition: let them know that once theyre done building their fort, they can take their lunch and the laptop out to their cardboard fortress and watch a movie (or two). Now not only are they well-fed and occupied, theyre also having an adventure that will help them feel good about their first day in their new home. Now both you and your kids are off to a great start!
