I once knew a guy who crashed his motorcycle and got injured. He did not have motorcycle coverage, although he thought he was covered by the auto policy he was under. In the end, he assumed all of the risk and the loss of his bike. He also had to pay for his own medical bills, but luckily it was only a broken arm. Of course, it still was a lot of outside of pocket medical bills. Simply put, you absolutely need to check your medical coverage for your policy!
Medical payments coverage may be similar to other types of coverage, in that they only apply in cases defined under your coverage. If a category is excluded, and the act or event falls under the exclusion, you will not be covered, nor will your third party. There is much exclusion to standard policies so it is necessary to go over everything with an agent. Here are a couple examples.
Say you are running a business from home. If someone falls on your property while doing business with you, that person is excluded from your medical payments coverage. You will be directly responsible for him. Other cases of exclusion include worker's compensation exclusions for auto insurance medical coverage. If you become injured while under employment and regardless of whether you qualify for or apply for worker's compensation, you will be precluded from coverage. In regards to auto insurance, there are very specific conditions for which you need to be occupying your vehicle. It will either be covered or excluded. For example, if you use a motor home or an RV, you may need to look at a variation of homeowner's insurance, and not auto insurance. However, auto policies may be required while driving the RV.
