Make Certain You Are Properly Insured
When you sign on that proverbial dotted line make certain that you know what will be covered
, not if, but when you file a claim. Too many insurance brokers sell policies that their customers would be better off without. Sure any business needs insurance to pro-tect themselves, but make certain you are properly insured. The reason you want and need insurance is to protect your customers, but also to keep you doing your job.
The obvious thing to do is to read the entire policy, even the small print, and dont leave anything to chance. But how many of us do that? We tend to trust the broker or salesman. Just remember they are in sales, and often stretch the truth or even outright lie about the great job their company will do for you. Selling the policy becomes first and foremost in their efforts.
Many policies are hard to understand. You think they mean one thing when in actuality they mean the exact opposite. There is nothing wrong with you asking the salesman to explain the policy to you line by line. They may cover the use of ladders, but exclude the use of water fed poles. While covering ladders, they may not cover the use of platforms or cherry pickers.
When you use specific cleaning objects, make sure they are covered. If your policy is cheaper that most, there may be a reason.
If you clean carpets or upholstery, be sure the insurance policy states that you will be covered if you ruin that antique chair while trying to clean it. Otherwise you may be responsible for thousands of dollars to replace the ruined item.
A business person needs to understand the risks they take when dealing with an insurance company. Hire a company that is specific what they cover and dont cover. Read the exclusion in policies even if they send the exclusion separate from the original policy. Make sure their terms are not vague and they must be easy to under-stand.
Unless that salesperson understands your business, they may not be aware of your needs. Dont hire them, but find a reputable company that understands what is important to you.
