Laundry Instructions For Men's Fashion
Advertisements in the world of men's fashion usually dazzle you with glamorous images
of well to do men picking out briefcases and silk neckties in upscale stores. What they don't tell you, however, is that buying the clothes and assembling your outfit is only half of the battle of style. In order to win the war, you also have to be able to get down and (literally) dirty with your stuff, giving each one exactly the treatment that it needs.
Doing Dry Cleaning
Labels that proclaim "dry clean only" are common, especially with higher end labels of men's fashion. You can bet that the maker didn't just put that label in there for kicks; the instruction was placed on your clothing to be followed, and follow it you should if you're serious about making your style investment last.
The reason behind this is simple. Regular machine washing makes your clothes endure all sorts of harsh treatment including chemicals (detergent is a pretty strong base), water (which can be a problem for thick coats) and physical force. Dry cleaning, as the name suggests, doesn't employ the last two. Chemicals and special no water processes are used to rid your clothes of stains, making the method a fashion industry favorite.
In the unlikely case that you have an item without any indication on how to care for it, there are some standard procedures in men's fashion. Unless you're dealing with linen, formal fashion should always be sent to the dry cleaners after use. Anything made of materials that are sensitive to water, suede and velvet, for example, also automatically qualify for a session at the dry cleaners.
No, not all dry cleaners are the same. Although they generally use the same chemicals and processes, the expertise with which they deal with your clothes always varies. Some can handle a white silk necktie with an ugly ketchup stain and return it to you good as new, while most others can only handle routine "clean me up" orders. Ask around for suggestions, find one that fits your preferences and stick with that establishment.
Washin' Fashion
For most everything else in your wardrobe, just your regular wash cycle should do. Your underwear, shirts and polos aren't so delicate, they are, in fact, made to endure abuse, so having them dry cleaned is a waste of time and money. Of course, there are still a few rules you'll have to observe while you're at the laundromat.
Many labels nowadays order you to "wash with like colors." And, you guessed it, it's one of those imperatives that are imperative for you to follow. Running colors are always a major threat to your clothes, even when you're washing four year-old items. And unless tie dye comes back into men's fashion, don't expect to wear those damaged items again.
Don't get too heavy with the detergent, as just a small amount will suffice in most cases. The chemicals in the average detergent formulation can be harmful to your clothes when used in great amounts, and excessive direct contact with fabric can wear out the colors. If there's a major stain that you want to remove, use a bleach pen or stain stick on the area instead of adding more detergent to the wash cycle.
Prewashing treatments are always a good idea, especially if you're the kind of guy who takes the extra mile for fashion. Adding a bit of vinegar to your wash water, for example, neutralizes strong smells and helps knock out stubborn stains. And an hour's soak in cold H2O, meanwhile, keeps colors stay on your clothes a wee bit longer than usual.
Like most guys, you probably invest in your fashion instead of merely buying clothes. All these 'proper' instructions on caring for your clothes may sound like added chores, but they're practical things that every style conscious man should know. Unless you dispose of your clothes after every wearing, making each piece last should be a top priority.
