Men's Style Sins With Polo Shirts

Versatility is supposed to be one of the many strengths of the polo shirt in men's fashion

. After all, you couldn't expect anything less from the style piece that's thought of as the middle ground between shirts and tees. But just because it's versatile doesn't necessarily mean that it's also foolproof. Doing wrong by your polo shirts could also end you up getting the worst of both tees and shirts at the same time.

Too Tight

Whether the discussion is on pants or necktie knots, 'too tight' is never a good adjective in men's fashion. Not only is the result uncomfortable, but you probably end up revealing things about your body that were probably better left hidden. Regardless of how toned or buff your physique is from countless hours at the gym, the reason why you're clothed is to cover your body, not show even more of it.

Do your nipples show through the fabric of the polo shirt? Do you feel the fabric constrict around either your chest or your abdomen? Does your polo shirt scrunch up all over when you try to stretch out an arm? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then your polo shirt is very likely too tight for your body.

While it's true that good men's fashion dictates that tops should fit close to your body, no rule ever said that the fabric should hug your every curve. Have the shoulder seams of the polo coordinated to yours, but the girth of the item itself should be proportional to your body. Polo shirts are known as one of the more forgiving fits in men's fashion, so try a size bigger if your usual size already violates one of the rules of tasteful style.

Too Busy

As style relatives of the casual tee, polo shirts should, on paper, be appropriate for events that are less than formal. But sharing the DNA of the t shirt also means that polo shirts are susceptible to the fashion faux pas of a top that's trying to do too much.

You've probably seen the kind of fashion victim that's being referred to: the tee with six colors in its design, a text graphic, color blocking and even an abstract print to boot. It's so tempting to do the same with polo shirts, to demand that they have so many colors and make so many statements in so little space. What you have to remember, though, is that versatility with other style pieces is always the priority in men's fashion.

Keep your polo shirts about as simple as you can have them. See to it that they have no more than three colors, with at least one color dominating so that you'll know how to pair it with other items. And while color blocking can look cool on a polo shirt occasionally, text and abstract patterns very rarely do. If you can stick to basic geometric patterns, then you'll find your polo shirt collection much easier to live with.

The Popped Collar

One of the emerging trends today, particularly in the college fashion scene, is the collar that's popped up and left up. While raising your collar can be perfectly legitimate on days that are less than ideally warm, style pundits all agree that it's a practice to be avoided if you can help it.

The most effective use of the polo shirt is when it's worn as the classic piece that it is, the same way Ivy League preppies have been wearing them for ages. It's like making up your own way of tying a necktie: once the novelty factor wears off after about six seconds, the good old tried-and-tested method of wearing it gains the style advantage once again.

Notice that not all polo shirts are considered as timeless as each other. It's typically the more classic designs, solids with little to no embellishments, that can be worn year in and year out for decades. The sheer simplicity of it lies behind that kind of versatility, and the best idea is for you to maintain that formula in men's fashion.
