Mens Fashion Accessories - The Perfect Tie
Men's fashion has always been more about individual quality than sheer quantity
. Guys bickering over who has the better watch or the higher end shoes more often than on the amount of clothes they have. Neckties are very rarely a topic of discussion, probably due to their ubiquity and anonymity. Should the occasion ever arise, though, here are some of the things that'll give you an advantage over everyone else in the conversation.
Fabric
Countless manufacturers churned out thousands of ties in the last 24 hours alone, but not all of them are what you'd call quality. In fact, most of them are probably made of some inexpensive material, making the necktie literally just a strip of cloth to hang from the neck. Quality is king when it comes to neckties, and that means only the finest silk.
Even as science keeps coming up with new and more sophisticated fabrics every day, silk remains the gold standard of quality neckties. That is because its texture and drape are just perfect for neckties, while at the same time having some strength to it. Although silk does cost more per piece, it's not unheard of for silk neckties to last years, even decades.
Neckties are constructed in layers of lining, and the number of layers is proportional to the quality of the final product. Seven is the magic number for silk neckties, and the seven-fold tie is what you'd want to get if you want a tie that you can actually brag about.
Color
If your idea of the perfect tie is one that you can match with any shirt in your closet, then color should definitely be a consideration as well. You have likely heard of the term "classics" by now if you read about men's fashion, and the principle applies to neckties as well. The most versatile and shirt-compatible ties are the ones that come in more classic colors, so you should lean more toward those than the garish shades at the store.
Black, for example, is a favorite color in fashion because it can go with virtually anything as any piece. In the same vein, a black tie is a suitable way to finish off any look from a white shirt over denims to a colored shirt under a sharp suit. Other dark colors like navy and burgundy, however, can work just as well.
Size
Neckties are about as individual a purchase as, say, dress pants and leather shoes. You could get the most classic colors and the most modern cuts, but you still won't be able to do anything with it if it doesn't fit you right. The fit of the necktie is a subtle but crucial qualification that separates the casual shopper from the truly sartorial man.
Ties are one of those things that should be sized just right: just the right length and just the right width. The tie should be long enough to at least have the tip touch your belt, but not long enough that it actually goes past your it.
Widths are a trickier consideration because they work differently for different guys. What looks good on your gym-buff friend might not be the same one for your Burberry model of an officemate. Just remember to always keep the width proportional to your body: a thick tie for a heavier build, a slimmer one for a trimmer frame. Keep the width from two and a quarter to three and a quarter inches at the thickest part, and you will do fine.
Brand
In the quality-conscious world of men's fashion, the discussion is equal parts what you are wearing and who you are wearing. That's why Brooks Brothers suits and Charvet shirts are in such consistently high demand, even with their relatively higher price tags. Ties, similarly, are a craft for which you should pay a premium if you want quality.
There are some quality tie-makers out there, typically the same ones who can make you a custom necktie from scratch. It's these brand name craftsmen that you should seek out if you are serious about quality. You will have to spend more for these handcrafted pieces, but it's a worthy investment any way you look at it.
